Hertz Champion Filly of Last Year Beats Reigh Count in Mile Gallop at Churchill Downs, Covering the Distance in Fast Time of 1:40 2-5 « LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 8. — The exceptional speed of Anita Peabody, the star filly in the stable of Mrs. John D. Hertz of Chicago, was well demonstrated at Churchill Downs this morning when the daughter of Luke McLuke — La Dauphine outlooked Reigh Count, Mrs. Hertz favorite for the Derby, in a mile gallop. Trainer Bert Michell worked the two horses together and had them sent j i ! ANITA PEABODY into their trial from the barrier in the chute. Anita Peabody was timed in 1 : 40% and led her popular stablemate by three-quarters of a length at the finish of the milo. Reigh Count was timed in 2:10% for a mile and a quarter, the final quarter of which was done in a canter. He succeeded in passing Anita Peabody when little more than a sixteenth of a mile from the finish of a mile and a quarter. The Stilly was pulled up to a walk when she reached the close of the Derby route. Starter William Hamilton released the barrier that sent the stars into their move and while doing the first quarter Anita Peabody succe-ecled in- gaining a margin of about a half length over Reigh Count. This margin was increased to three-quarters of a length when she reached the end of a half mile in :4S, after going three-eighths in :36, and Reigh Count was not permitted to reduce his companions advantage as they continued along under strong restraint. The filly was caught in 1:14 for three-quarters. Anita Peabodys trial was regarded as her best of the year and the ease and smoothness with which she "shaded" the Derby favorite won her high praise. The- work, which was nothing like a severe task for either, was regarded as the best of the morning. Beigh Count was in his usual, running mood and it was with difficulty that jockey Chick" Lang succeeded in keeping him out of his running stride as he galloped him a mile previous to the trial. Dark Eagle, R. S. Clarks Derby hope, which trained so well at the Lexington track, had his first brisk gallop over the Derby course this morning. The son of Star Hawk did a mile in 1 :41%, finishing very easily. He was timed in :24% ; :49 and 1:14% for the earlier parts of the run, and at no time did Charles Cofer, his rider, release him from stout restraint. Jack Higgins. which carried the colors of W. Curran to an unexpected victory in the Louisiana Derby renewal last March, had his preparation for the Kentucky classic furthered when he galloped a mile and a quarter in 2 :12% early this morning. It was an easy assignment for the son of Sweep, which went the first quarter in :25, half mile in :52, three-quarters in 1 :19, and mile in 1:46. Over at Douglas Park the rank Two Dans, in the J. J. Coughlin stable, went the Derby distance in 2 :14, driving. He was inclined to sulk and jockey Heupel experienced difficulty getting him through the trial. The fractional time for his work waa :24%, 49%, 1:17, 1:45*4, and 1:59. Continued on twenty -fourth page. GALLANT ANITA PEABODY Continued from first page.i John S.
