Mueller, local business man and owner and breeder, absented himself from Churchill Downs today out of respect for his wifes mother. Mrs. Lillian G. Johnston, who died Sunday. Whitney. Trainer Milo Shields has Pcnthorn, the Penthorn Stable three-year-old, going along i fairly well. The gelding suffered a mishap while being prepared for the Louisiana c Derby. News of the death of Dr. R. W. MeCully at his home in New York City saddened his i numerous friends among the officials, horse-|i , men and others here. Jockey Fronk was an arrival from Lexington and reported that the horses of C. W. Moore will be shipped from the Kentucky Association track to Fairmount Fark next week. Clyde Van Dusen returned this morning from Chicago, where he went to inspect the horses he has at Exposition Park. Van Dusen stated that the Aurora meetinT is "the • best ever conducted at the plant. But one horse, the three-year-old filly Black Gal, accompanied W. J. Currans Louisiana Derby winner, Jack Higgins, here from Maryland. L. V. Bellew, Jr., brought the horses Soot- : land Yard, Blue Granite and Katherine W. from Lexington, while his father proceeded from the latter city to Astoria with the stable of J. C. Ellis. William Woodard has in training here three two-year-olds, the property of R. L. Woodard of Louisville. Jockey Paul Hebert, recently restored to good standing by the stewards of the Louisiana Jockey Club, was given a license by the stewards and got into colors during the a Iter noon. i John Payne, Jr., and Harold Payne, interested in the Kenton Farm Stable, Which will ! make a bid for the Kentucky Derby with Typhoon, were among the opening clays visi- I tors from Cincinnati. Ten horses, all of his own breeding, make up the well balanced stable W. F. Poison of Buffalo has in training here. Half of the racers are two-year-olds and the entire band are the get of Basil and Peace Pennant, which are standing at Basil Manor Farm. R. J. Gilmore has taken over to train for F. A. Douglass the four-year-old filly Thistle Bit. J. J. Beckham, Jacksonville jurist, will race i ! I the horsos II. G. Wilkins is training for him under the nome de course of Lake Alto Stable. Jockey Harry Richards, under engagement to the IT. P. Headley stable, arrived from Maryland and got into action without delay. Trainer II. S. G. Wilkins and Robert Zipf were licensed by the stewards today. The officials for the meeting are : Charles F. Price, S. C. Nuckols, T. C. Bradley and Elijah Hogg, stewards; W. H. Shelley and X. H.
