Port Harlem left no doubt in the minds of those witnessing the race concerning her superiority. She literally lost the others and reveled in the heavy going. She won by five lengths and could have Increased this margin considerably had Thurber, who substituted for Ambrose, so desired. Port Harlem left the barrier in a forward position and instantly tcok command, increasing her margin as the race progressed, and was only at a strong canter when nearing the finish. Ben Machree, beginning from an outer position after a nervous display at the post that entailed a ten-minute delay, was forced to race wide, but she closed an immense gap and wore down Thats It in the last sixteenth for second place. Thats It was well up throughout the race, but only succeeded by a small margin to finish before Lady Gossip. The latter displayed a fine performance and closed a big gap. The favorite Spooky Avas away tardily and continued to race in the middle of the field for three-eighths, coming fast through the stretch. The race carried a net value o ,540 to the winner. Port Harlan had considerable support. Continuous heavy rains served as a draw-bark for the racing, but it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the large crowd on hanj, which came in : "vane? of the Kentucky Derby running. The track waj a quagmire, but interesting sport developed. The publij was fairly successful in landing on winners, even though favorites v/er? bowled over. The introductory race, at six and a half furlongs, brought a dozen to the post and resulted in a victory for Harned Brothers McCulloch at a long price. Seminola. another jong-priced one, finished second and Lucky Drift, the favorite, was third. The race was always between this trio, McCulloch stood the hard stretch drive gamely and managed to draw away from Seminola in the last seventy yards. Lucky Drift made a game effort to head the leaders, approaching the stretch, but tired when hard urged. D. D. Canfield, Nashville sportsman, furnished his second winner in two days when Ragus, a two-year-old, making her first start. was returned an easy winner over Arline Connor, Bossie and ten other maiden juveniles in the second race. W. Crump hustled the winner clear of the others, after going the first quarter and, running as if she outclassed her opponents, raced along far in advance. Arline Connor came with a rush on the extreme outside to wear down Bossie and The Doctor for second place. Little Colonel took down his second purse in two days when he proved best among the nine platers that started at one mile in the third race. Tommy Root had the mount and gave him a well-judged ride. He passed Watch On into the lead after going half a mile, and after he made his way into a good lead held it gamely under hustling tactics. Geo. Groom, after making a bid on the stretch turn, tired in the lart eighth. Closing a big gap with a rush, George McCrann wore down Mino for third place. The winner was an outsider in the betting. The fourth race proved only a gallop for W. L. Drakes Downcast, which led all the ■way to win as his rider pleased. The Runt was always the chief contender, but could never get within striking distance of the winner, managing, however, to outstay Margate for second place. Master Sweeps inability to leave the barrier with the others marred the race. He turned sideways just as the barrier was released and the field was settled in its stride when he began running.
