FINAL DERBY TRIALS — ♦ Candidates for Blue Riband Given Short, Fast Gallops. ♦ Trainer Thompson Directs Favorites Workout from Sick Bed — Gardner Gelding Ready. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 17.— Edward R. Bradleys Blue Larkspur gave further evidence of his high quality and readiness for his best efforts in tomorrows fifty-fifth running of the Kentucky Derby, for which he continues to rule a pronounced choice, when he ran a half mile in :46% and pulled up five-eighths in 1:00, over the "hurchill Downs track early this morning. The brief speed test that the son of Black Servant and Blossom Time indulged in this morning, constituted his final preparation. He was worked with Bay Beauty, which also will carry Mr. Bradleys colors in the big race. Bay Beauty, while performing impressively, failed to match the speed of his stable companion. For the half mile Bay Beauty was timed in :48 and. ridden out briskly, negotiated another eighth in :13. concluding the five-eighths in 1 :01. The trials, prescribed by H. .1. "Dick" Thompson from his sick bed in a local hospital, were carried out under the direction of Barry Shannon, general manager of Mr. Bradleys racing interests, William Hurley, another of his trainers and Mr. Thompsons assistants. Thompson, who underwent an operation for appendicitis last Wednesday night, was reported to have passed a restful night and his attending physician today announced his condition as very satisfactory. GARNER ENROUTE FROM EAST. Following their trials both Blue Larkspur and Bay Beauty "cooled out" in fine fashion. Jockey Karl Horvath, who will ride Bay Beauty, is here and Mack Garner, the selected rider for Blue Larkspur, is due to arrive from New York Saturday morning, advices from him were to the effect that he will come with Willie Garner, his nephew, the scheduled rider of Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilts Chicatie. The latter was among the early Derby candidates on the track this morning. Trainer Alex Gordon sent him a half mile in :47-and, under light pressure. He went the first quarter in :234s. Gordon is satisfied with the manner in which the colt has taken his training and expects him to be a contender in the race. Herbert P. Gardners Clyde Van Dusen was the first Derby starter to work this morning. His trainer, for whom the gelding is named, sent him out with the older Torch Boy at n early hour and, under the guidance of jockey Clarence McCrossen, went a half mile in •49V5, and five-eighths in 1 andand%. He was under restraint throughout and gave every indication of having his best speed. Torch Boy accompanied him for the first half mile and was hard pressed to keep pace with the Derby candidate. Another impressive move was that of F. it, Grabners Windy City, winner of the Derby Trial here last Tuesday. Under the direction of trainer Jake Lowenstein, he was worked a half mile in :474s. well in hand, and w is eased up an additional eighth in 1 M.%. He ran the first quarter in :234and. and the three-eighths in :35%. FINISHING TOUCHES. More extended gallops were given Desha Ereckinridges Lord Braedalbane, Chaffee Earls Naishapur and the Audley Farms The Choctaw. The former was sent one mile at an easy pace in 1 :45, while Naishapur was iequired to negotiate three-quarters and responded nicely when he traversed the distance in 1:13% easily. Naishapur was timed in :25 for the quarter and in :49% for a half mile. With Fairdale. a stable companion. The Choctaw cantered three-quarters in 1 :lf , the first half mile in £1%. Upset Lad, the candidate of Summerfield and Hecht, exhibited high speed in his short trial of three-eighths which he was timed in :ZoVs. He was well in hand throughout. Baron Longs Ervast displayed a creditable performance in his half-mile preliminary. He worked in :4Sai ; the first quarter in :24. He showed to better advantage than at any time since his arrival in these parts. Minotaur, the entry of John R. Thompson, Jr., had his final preparation ovir a half mile and like a majority of his rivals was not greatly perserved with. With Dowagiac accompanying him, he went a half mile in :502f,. Paraphrase, H. P. Heaaieys candidate, was cantered a like distance in :53. J. J. Coughlins Karl Eitel was galloped a mile and Jacques Cohans Kssare went the same distance at a slow pace. Weather and track conditions for the morning could not have been improved. The dry temperautre during the night brought the track to a state of perfection. Preston M. Burch. trainer of Voltear, owned by Fisher and Grayson, came in- today. He announced that following Voltears engagement in the Derby the gelding will be shipped to Belmont Park, wtiere twenty-five other of the Fisher-Grayson horses are quartered. Voltear probably will be returned west to fill other derby engagements.
