RECORD DERBY FIGURES Notwithstanding adverse weather conditions Just before the running of the Derby last year all attendance records were broken, and the rate at which the great feature has grown in its appeal to racing fans and sports enthusiasts throughout the country it appears that each year will bring a new crowd record to further tax the accommodations of Churchill Downs. The volume of play last year, however, was a little short of the record established in 1927, which was 76,4S3. The 1928 total was 20,793. This was on the Derby alone, the total on all races having amounted to ,889 -200. In 1927 there were bought on the Whitney entry to win Whiskery and Bostonian, 4,7f.r» tickets of the denomination, ,763 "fives," 1,784 "tens." 1,020 "twenties" and 325 "hundreds." The straight betting on the Derbv amounted to a gross of 39,640. the place betting 63,994 and the show betting 72,849.
