NIATO AGAIN WORKS FAST Harry Payne Whitney Filly Goes Seven-Eighths in 1:29 at Churchill Downs. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 11. Harry Payne Whitneys Niato, one of the outstanding filly candidates for the Derby, showed fine speed at Churchill Downs this morning. Over a course that was fast but extremely deep in dust, she negotiated three-quarters in 1:15 and eased up seven-eighths in 1 :29. Her fractional time for the first five-eighths was :24, :3G, :48, 1:01. She will fill her engagement in the Ashland Oaks at Lexington before the running of the Derby. F. P. Letellier sent All Upset, the chestnut son of Upset Thoughtless Beauty, owned by the Southland Stable, in company with My Hobby one mile in 1 :46. He had up more than his Derby weight and after going to the half in :50, five-eighths in 1:04, was waved down by trainer Letellier to reach the first three-quarters in 1:18. Playtime, from the same stable, was sent a mile in 1 :47, having for his workmate Southland Boy. The fractional time was :51, 1:19. Trainer Letellier said that either one of his Derby charges could have gone better than 1 :44 for the mile. Bryan Ott,. who trains the horses of the French Lick Stable, owned by Thomas D. Taggart, sent Col. McCart and the Darby candidate The Senator five-eighths together in 1:08. The former began about three lengths in front of The Senator, which caught him easily and they finished together. The first half was run in the fractional time of :25, :54. Kay Spence worked Gallant Knight, the Audley Farm Stables Derby eligible, three-eighths in :39 in company with Easter Stockings. This move was in preparation for a longer trial Saturday. High Foot and other Derby prospects at the Downs were given useful gallops. Emil Herz showed a couple of fast two-year-old fillies to the spectators when trainer John Anderson sent Chic Flora and Dis Dame a half in the fractional time of :11, :23, :3G, :49. Two colts from this barn. Master Toney and Wild Law, went a half in :51 after going the first eighth in :12, quarter in :24, and three furlongs in :G6. Morsel, winner of the Harold Stakes at Latonia last spring, was worked six furlongs in 1 :20 by trainer Mose Lowenstein. John C. Ferris got in from New Orleans, dropping Fred Jr. and Zeta and two two-year-olds off at Douglas Park. His broodmare Malva foaled a chestnut colt by Fred Jr. at the Bashford Manor Farms last night. Junior C, which F. P. Letellier raced at New Orleans for Coley Miller, of Louisville, has been turned back to his owner. Charles F. Cherry, formerly trainer for the Wild Rose Farm Stable, was a visitor at the Downs. He contemplates opening a public training stable.
