LEXINGTONS FAVORITE E. F. Prichards Tannery Consid- ered Strong Derby Contender. Impresses Work Watchers at Kentucky Association Course in One Mile Workout. LEXINGTON". Ky., April 11. Tannery, the sturdy son of Ballot Blemished, which A. Baker is training for the Kentucky Derby, for Edward F. Prichard, Paris, Kentucky, breeder and owner, came through impressively in another preparatory trial for that important engagement when he went one mile in .1 :42 over the local Kentucky Association track this morning. The work, under an impost close to his Derby weight of 126 pounds, was nothing like a task for the well formed chestnut, and this despite the fact that it was his initial hard breeze over the distance. Tannery began at the stand and after going a quarter in :25. finished three-eighths in :37. His rider rated him evenly with the result that he completed a half mtle in :50; five-eighths in 1:02, and three-quarters in There was no lessening of the restraint maintained from the start as he galloped to the end of seven-eighths in 1:2S and finished the mile, hard held. The colt was favored by excellent training conditions and while several faster trials at the distance were recorded during the morning, none was accomplished with the ease with which the Prichard colt galloped over the mile. The rapid manner in which he cooled out, further reflected lack of severe effort on his part. PHENOMENAL I3IPR0VE3IENT. With each trial. Tannery has displayed almost phenomenal improvement and the manner in which he has been approaching racing condition practically assures his participation in at least one race during the coming local meeting and thorough readiness for the gruelling Derby route. He has the largest following of any of the western candidates for the Churchill Downs fixture among the horsemen here and one of the largest ever attracted by a Derby nominee . prepared at the local course. Owner Prichard came over from "his home , to witness the workout and was justly pleased with the manner in which his crack : standard bearer cleared another hurdle in , the long tedious program directed by his j trainer. It was work day for a large percentage Qf the leading three-year-olds among the many hundreds of horses quartered near and on the historic racing grounds and the track came in for extensive usage from dawn until late afternoon. Walter Taylor and Hal Price Headley were extremely busy sending many of the latters racers through their paces and those worked came through with some of the fastest moves of the season. They included Ante Bellum and Dark Entry, among the five Headley Derby eligibles and the former took the honors when he ran five-eighths in :59 and pulled up three-quarters in 1:14. He sped over the first quarter in :22, three-eighths in :34, and the half mile in :47. Dark Entry, which like Ante Bellum, worked from the three-quarters post, ran three-quarters in 1:13 handily; the five-eighths in 1:00. He was timed in :23 for the first quarter; :34, three-eighths, and :47 for the half mile. ALCIBIADES EASILY. Alcibiades and Howtiz, which round out the Headley Derby quartet, and the former among the outstanding Oaks candidates, ran three-quarters in 1 :E5 and 1:16. respectively. Alcibiades went along easily, while Howtiz was under restraint. Fractional time for the fillys trial was :25, :507s and 1 :02. Alike Hall, owned by R. M. Eastman, and Mr, Headleys Pigeon Hole were other well known performers worked by trainer Taylor. Mike Hall galloped three-quarters in 1:16 and Contiuued on sixteenth page. LEXINGTONS FAVORITE Continued from first page. Pigeon Hole ran the same distance in 1:15, handily. Dick OHara, which may carry the colors of Patrick H. Joyce, Chicago enthusiast, in the Kentucky Derby, figured in an exceptional speed test with AVingo when they ran a quarter in :227s ; three-eighths in :34 ; half mile in :48 and five-eighths in 1:00. Dick OHara eased up an additional eighth in 1:15, while Wingo finished three-quarters handily in 1 :15. Dick OHara, a son of Light Brigade Epsom May, is receiving his training under the direction of B. B. Williams and appears to be in condition for sprinting. He will return for competition here and following a shore race, AVilliams will put him to a test over greater distance. W. S. Dudleys Ray Blades, also among the Derby eligibles, ran three-quarters in 1:14, under hard driving and in company with Easter Morn. They ran the quarter in :22 ; half mile in :4S, and five-eighths in 1:00. C. W. Bidwills Tea Cracker traversed a mile under severe pressure in 1 :42 ; the quarter in :24 ; half mile in :48, and three-quarters in 1 :15, and Bianchi and Williamsons Baffling Star went a mile in 1:48. Both are named for the Churchill Downs race. H. P. Gardners Clyde Van Dusen, winner of last years Kentucky Derby, went five-eighths :n 1:05. Trainer Clyde "Van Dusen is bringing him to racing condition slowly. Dedicate, the Everglade Stables Derby eligible, was given a useful gallop and is expected to figure in a more ambitious work tomorrow. The condition of Stone and Puckers Lucile showed no improvement today and her chances to .recover are regarded as poor. She was running a temperature of 105 this morning .and the congested condition of one of her lungs leaves little chance for her.
