METROPOLITAN TO JACK HIGH Son of John P Grier Runs One Mile in 135 New American Time Record for Distance NEW YORK N Y May 24 George D Wideners Jack High the fouryearold son of John P Grier and Priscilla racing one mile in 135 a new American record for competition was winner of the Metropolitan Handicap the big feature of a great day of racing staged by the Westchester Racing Association at Belmont Park Balko winner of both the Toboggan and Speed Handicaps carried the Sagamore Stable silks into second place and his pace made the fast time possible while it was James Butlers Questionnaire that raced third before the Wheatley Stables Distraction It was a wonderful renewal of a wonderful race and though timed pri ¬ vately Jack High was shown to have run in l354s none the less a wonderful perform ¬ ance The prize had a value of 8275 to the winner winnerThe The companion feature of the big day was the Charles L Appleton Memorial Steeple ¬ chase and like the Metropolitan it brought a great contest and saw Bangle from the Dorwood Stable victorious victoriousAlthough Although the day was dreary and chilly it was a magnificent crowd that turned out for a great day of sport The commodious parking spaces were crowded to capacity while the Long Island trains were uncom ¬ fortably crowded from early in the day until the last one that brought the crowd back to New York And there were visitors all the way from Chicago for the one days sport while Philadelphia had a big delega tion on hand The entertainment that was offered was worthy of more favorable weather but the leaden skies and threats of rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of the great crowd while between the races the beautiful paddock had its largest crowd of the season seasonChatford Chatford caused some slight delay at the post in the Metropolitan Handicap but the start was a good one with Maya one of the W B Coe pair first to show tlie way Black Majesty his stablemate was close up and he was always in third place with Jack High and Balko close at hand handThis This did not last long for Balko rushed through at a killing pace to take the lead Black Majesty was in second place and Mc Atee was content to send Jack High along at the heels of the threeyearold Maya and Questionnaire followed and the others of the company were more or less strung out Balko was soon two lengths clear and then McAtee gradually moved up with Jack High until he had gone into second place before Black Majesty Questionnaire was going well back of the Coe colt This was the order as the turn for home was reached Balko was still showing the way and racing Continued on twentyfirst page LOWERS ONE MILE RECORD Continued from first page strongly as he turned for home Bejshak had lost no ground and he was holding his horse together nicely Going to the furlong post Jack High was wearing him down at every stride and as he finally ranged alongside and Balko showed a disposition to fight along gamely McAtee swung his whip once As it fell Jack High took command and from there to the fin ¬ ish McAtee had hold of his mount to cross the line winner by two lengths Balko had run a wonderful race under his burden of 120 pounds to save second place after car ¬ rying the burden of that pace and Ques ¬ tionnaire had proved himself when he was third only a length and a half back Dis ¬ traction after being outrun early was a fast finishing fourth and the others were well beaten Petee Vrack in particular running a dull race raceTwentyone Twentyone maiden twoyearold fillies started in the opening race It resulted in a stirring finish with victory going to Sunny Lassie racing for Mrs William Ziegler JrJs Middleburg Stable with Whisker from the Montpelicr Farms Stable a close second and the Ramapo Stables Chicsu finishing third thirdThe The start was a good one and Chicsu showed such fine speed that she seemed a sure winner until well inside the final fur ¬ long There the others gained with a rush and as the daughter of Chicle tired the first four were past the line only noses apart There was a memory of a rivalry of a few years back when a daughter of Haste and a daughter of Bubbling Over competed in the race Those two colts were great rivals in 1926 but Bubbling Over went amiss before he verified his brilliant victory in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby DerbyBangle Bangle racing for Victor Emanuels Dor wood Stable with Pat Donoghue riding went to victory in the Charles Appleton Memorial Steeplechase repeating his score of two years ago when he won the same prize for Thomas Hitchcock He was ridden out vigorously to score over Laufjunge from the Log Cabin Stud while Thomas Hitchcocks Actor with G H Pete Bostwick the accomplished amateur in the saddle led home old Jolly Roger which bore the silks of the Greentree Stable StableNine Nine went to the post and there were three falls when both Indigo and Taras Hall went down at the front field Liverpool and Crumpler went down at the tenth fence after playing a part in the running runningThe The race had a value of 6200 to the win ¬ ner as well as the handsome challenge cup which is presented by Mrs Payne Whitney WhitneyNo No time was lost at the post and the field j went away at a great pace Taras Hall was first to show out of the company but Indigo Actor and Crumpler were right with him and Lambert took Jolly Roger back to rate him well back of the leaders leadersThis This order was pretty well maintained un ¬ til the front field when Indigo went down and Taras Hall fell over him At that time Donoghue was close at hand with Bangle and Actor racing along with him Laufjunge was following the pair and Crumpler was right there until he hit the tenth fence which brought him down Up to this time Lambert had made no move on old Jolly Roger but in the back field he roused him and the old fellow rapidly made up ground It was an impressive move but Bangle was going strong well in the lead and Actor was hang ¬ ing on with rare courage while Laufjunge was rapidly overtaking the fouryearold in spite of his weak underpinning underpinningDonoghue Donoghue still had Bangle clear of his company as he swung into the front field and there Laufjunge had headed Actor Lambert by this time was driving Jolly Roger furiously and the old gelding was re ¬ sponding with courage but it was apparent the chase was a fruitless one oneSafely Safely over the last fence Donoghue sat down and rode a great finish on Bangle to have him over the line the winner by a length Laufjunge never faltering was right at his heels and three lengths before Actor while the fouryearold had beaten Jolly Roger by a like distance Rooney was fifth and Beelzebub last of the company companyThe The raca was one to suggest that after all Jolly Roger has not come back to his best form for under the conditions of the race he seemed to have a decided weight advan ¬ tage when only required to take up 145 pounds poundsFortunately Fortunately all three riders Byers Pierce and Ball suffered no serious hurts
