son of Man o War Batanbea car ¬ rying the black and white striped jacket of J F Byers Philadelphia sportsman added the Toronto Cup Handicap one mile and an eighth to his important turf triumphs when he defeated the best band of stayers that could be mustered for the race that held the attention of turf enthusiasts in the Dominion of Canada at Woodbine Park today In a spectacular finish the Byers racer earned 12580 when he led home Marine from the Mount Royal Stable A length separated the pair when they finished the route in 152 Third went to Sir Harry from the Seagram Stable and fourth fell to Montanaro MontanaroIt It was a great renewal of this important prize and a crowd of excellent size turned out to witness the race along with two other stake attractions and four other races that brought the spring meeting of tho Ontario Jockey Club to a close closeSon Son o Battle was in the thick of conten ¬ tion from the barriers releasewhen he raced along in pursuit of Gold Brook and Monta ¬ naro in the early stages Beacon Hill was going along in fourth place while Marine was right with him and leading Sir Harry which was before Rejuvenation RejuvenationSon Son o Battle reached even terms with the pacemakers before the turn out of the back stretch and Maiben permitted him to take command Marine was having some diffi ¬ culty in securing racing room but at the far turn Slate elected to come to the outside and at the final furlong post Marine went up to the Byers starter but Maiben was sav ¬ ing him for such an emergency and when shaken up Sen o Battle readily responded to draw clear near the end The William Hendrie Memorial Handicap the second of the big prizes of the day saw a field of nine homebreds starting J E Smallmans Gay Parisian won in a driving finish enriching the coffers of the London Ont sportsman by 3800 when he beat Po ¬ land H News Kings Plate winner Aymond by a length Third fell to J C Fletchers Perlapides when he got up for that position to take the measure of Spearhead from the Tedlu Stable StableThis This was the twentyfirst running of this stake and from a good start Circulet one of the Seagram pair raced out from his inside position to take command Aymond was sent along with him and Shorelint followed the pair with Troutlet another of the New start ¬ ers next and the others being rated along as Beau of the West followed Circulet held his pacemaking position until the turn out of the back stretch and it was Aymond that went up to displace the Seagram starter Gay Parisian at this stage was beginning his rush and coming on the outside was in second position in the final furlong and just a neck back from Aymond which was showing signs of tiring from chasing Circulet Gay Parisian was giving his best and V Smith had him in the lead in the last sixteenth to have him draw away right near the end endThe The introductory race the Alexandra Plate for homebred juveniles resulted in a popular victory for the J P White stable when Roche dOr raced to a handy victory to take the measure of Fess from the Thorncliffe Stable by three lengths while third fell to Mrs N McLeods Candy Man when he easily led Bold from the Seagram outfit and the three others that included Moon Crest a stable mate of the winner winnerMOLD MOLD SETS PACE PACEBold Bold was the one to set the pace and Fess was offering him the most opposition as Candy Man led Roche dOr which had a big margin over the others at the first turn Bold was being sent along at his best pace by McGinnis but Fess was hanging on gamely and the last furlong found the latter taking a slight lead Roche dOr by this time was racing in full stride and coming to the outside with her belated rush gained the lead in the last sixteenth and drew away steadily at the end Fess easily held Candy Man safe while Bold was quitting to a walk and just managed to outstay Pampered Pet The White entrants in this were oddson favorites with the winner ridden by A Rob ¬ ertson ertsonThe The Woodbine Steeplechase Handicap a race of two and onehalf miles that saw a field of nine starting resulted in a driv ¬ ing finish with Malvoisine from the East land Farm Stable winner in a sinewstrain ¬ ing finish She lasted to beat Dragon de Vertu racing for John Bosley by a head to earn the prize that was worth 5010 And incidentally it proved to be the second stake victory for this mare here her pre ¬ vious triumph taking place in the Fraser Memorial decided on the opening day In this Moholi one of two that raced for the Flying Horse Stable earned third and War Flier the member of the Sewickley Stable was fourth to easily lead Bally Weaver and two others that completed the trying course courseMalvoisine Malvoisine went into command at the fourth jump and steadied along for the re ¬ mainder of the journey hung on with game ness to just last for the major portion of the purse Dragon de Vertu after being reserved for two turns of the field came along with a belated burst of speed in the last half mile to finish wearing the winner down at every stride Following the plac ¬ ing G Smoot ascended the stewards stand to lodge a claim of foul that was not al ¬ lowed after a few moments consultation Moholi was beaten by a length and a half with War Flier four lengths in back of the Flying Horse entrant Eider fell at the third and John Sobieski was pulled up at the seventeenth jump jumpThe The third race saw a band of eleven good sprinters out of the claiming brigade fur ¬ nishing the contention over six furlongs and in this Lamp Black from the Palmwood Stable earned brackets to lead every step of the way and in a driving finish scored by a neck from Mrs E Glasscos Daisy Fair which chased the winner throughout Third fell to R Pendings Ima Queen while Mint Sauce raced into fourth place for the Eastland Farm Stable Lamp Black dashed into command shortly after the start which found all but Nick Cullop away in good fashion The latter refused to leave and was left Daisy Fair raced along with the Palmwood starter to offer the contention and Babble was next in line and pinned in on the rail Daisy Fair made a determined effort to get within a head of the winner on the turn but Lamp Black had something left and in that final furlong under a drive managed to hold to his task willingly to earn the verdict Daisy Fair was a length and onehalf in advance of Ima Queen QueenThere There were four to try conclusions in the one mile and onesixteenth of the sixth event which was tinder claiming conditions and in this Gnome Boy from the R Pending barn returned victorious when he came from behind the pace established by Surtees and Marlboro to reach the end of the journey just a trifle less than a length in front Surtees lasted to take second and Fair Bill was up to land third from the tiring Marlboro MarlboroGay Gay Parisian and Rejuvenation both of which performed in the stake events of the day were withdrawn from the six named and with only four in
