FIRST OF SEX TO WIN Easter Stockings Victress in Grainger Memorial Handicap Audley Farm Mare Defeats Toro Toroin in Churchill Downs Fixture Pigeon Hole Third LOUISVILLE Ivy May 24 Easter Stock ¬ ings the great fiveyearold daughter of Sir Barton ahd Irish Lassie which races for the Audley Farm of Bernard B Jones Virginia owner and breeder proved the first of her sex to account for the coveted Grainger Memorial Handicap the irrfportant Churchill Downs fixture when she easily accounted for the eighteenth renewal of the race before a tremendous crowd at the local course this afternoon Running the one and onequarter miles in the fast time of 2 05 over a spotted cuppy track she won by one and onehalf lengths from E B McLeans Toro the fa ¬ vorite and winner of last years running of the race while H P Headleys Pigeon Hole raced to third place two lengths back and a nose in the van of the Morven Studs Whiskery WhiskerySix Six others namely such stalwarts as Blackwood Lady Broadcast Royal Julian Ben Machree The Nut and Buddy Basil were included in the brilliant field and the failure of The Nut which vied with Toro for the largest following occasioned some dis ¬ appointment appointmentIt It was a victory which established the winner as perhaps better in this her fourth campaign than in any previous year and netted the considerable sum of 10400 together wth a handsome and valuable replica of the Grainger Memorial Cup Mr Jones will hold the original Grainger trophy for one year Elmo Shropshire had the winning mount and notwithstanding recent impressive ef ¬ forts of the Audley mare she prevailed at long odds and her accomplishment added to the large number of surprises which came with the Saturday sport sportNever Never farther back than fourth and lucky to save first mile began improving his position on the outside and got home by the commanding margin mentioned above While Pigeon Hole readily gave way to the winner and Toro he gamely outflnished Whiskery and the latter was considerably in advance of Lady Broadcast and the much distressed Blackwood But for a mild chal ¬ lenge on the turn leading to the stretch The Nut offered no encouragement and dur ¬ ing the run through the stretch he tired rapidly rapidlyIt It was a glorious day for the sport and the stake topped a program that brought out one of the largest other than Derby dayt crowds in the record of the track trackC C C Van Meters Black Comet made it three victories in four starts when he de ¬ feated Empire Don Leon and two others from among the well regarded juveniles in the Memories Purse which preceded the stake race Under a good ride by Frank Chiavetta the winner scored by a neck over Empire the Laffoon Yeiser representative which was installed favorite and Don Leon followed three lengths back The latter was quickest to find his best speed but the winner kept within close range and easily disposed of the Collins colt when ready As Black Comet pulled away from tvo early leader Empire gradually stole up and while finishing fast ¬ est could not get to the victor victorOutburst Outburst raced from a good distance back with a rush through the stretch to score her maiden triumph over eleven other non winners from among the juvenile fillies in the opening race With keen belated speed she filed past five of her rivals in the stretch but it was only in the closing strides that she overhauled Rest Easy an outsider which went along prominently throughout Regal Lady which cut out most of the pace saved third one and onehalf lengths back The winner a daughter of Messenger was ridden by Eddie Ambrose and the combination prevailed at oddson oddsonRetort Retort The Southerner and Tantivy raced to the end of the six and onehalf furlongs in the second race noses apart the finish rivaling any during the meeting In the thrilling windup Retort had just enough left to win and The Southerner took second place Five others followed and they in ¬ cluded the wellbacked Port Harlem which Herrick nosed out for fourth place almost two lengths back of Tantivy TantivyWhile While Port Harlem failed to challenge after reaching the stretch the placed trio came through with belated speed and while Retort and The Southerner reached the final eighth no small distance in the van of Tantivy he outran them during the subsequent running and in another stride might have gained the lead Hot Shot which held sway to the stretch tired badly thereafter as did Gra ¬ cious Gift which forced the formers early pace paceD D Louder formerly with the Three Ds Stock Farm Stable has been engaged to race five of the Coldstream Stud horses through the coming Thistle Down meeting meetingR R C Frakes who has been resting at his Lexington home came over from that city for the afternoon
