It means the demonstration of other modern ideas in race course equipment and it promises to be a big day for Florida and for the American turf. There has been an eleventh hour rush to have all in readiness for the opening day, and day and night shifts have been working hard for some time to complete the monster undertaking of Joseph E. Widener. Marvels have been accomplished and indications are that the opening will be the most brilliant function in the history of racing in Florida. For the opening feature, the offering is the Hialeah Inaugural Handicap, a six furlong dash to which ,500 is added. It has attracted a noted band of sprinters that would grace a mid-summer card anywhere and each of those that has accepted the weights has been training brilliantly for the race. Thirteen are named for this sprint and they include Flying Heels, top weight, under 126 pounds and Vander Pool, the sensation of the Hialeah meeting of 1930, under 125 pounds. Judge Schilling is another eligible with 118 pounds and Knight Commander comes next with 117 as his impost. The setting for the feature is a notable one and there will be great interest in the two-year-old offering, a dash of a quarter mile through the nursery course. The Hollywood is a seven furlong dash for all ages and there is the Tamiami Claiming Handicap oi one mile that promises wen. So much has been written and sent out of Continued on thirteenth vuge. HIALEAH PARK OPENS TODAY .Continued from first page. Miami descriptive of the improvement of Hialeah Park as a racing plant, that scant attention may have been paid, except by the close observers of the workouts of horses, to the high-class of a large number of horses now in training for winter racing at that course, many of which are pointing for the Inaugural Handicap and other early features of the Hialeah meeting. This meeting will bring back into action a large number of horses which figured prominently during the fall meetings on the Maryland tracks, and some which competed with success on the New York tracks such horses, as Flying Heels, Panetian, Tote Halcyon, Helianthus, Vander Pool and Judge Schilling. Also on the grounds and training in a satisfactory manner are others that, though having nation-wide reputations, met with most of their success on middle-western tracks Lady Broadcast, Knight Commander, Don Leon, Kincsen, Calf Roper, Culloden, My Dandy and a good many others. The return of some of these horses to the races will attract attention throughout the country. Lady Broadcast was retired from competition early last summer, having met with scant success as a five-year-old after reigning as the queen of racers as a four-year-old. If she shows any of her old speed in competition at Hialeah she certainly may be expected to contribute much to the glamour of that meeting. That she will can only be presumed from the reports of her training, which have been highly encouraging. Vander Pool, which enjoyed the longest stretch of victories of any modern youngster, is quite at home in Florida, where he began his winning streak, and he is showing by his morning trials that he is fit. It is doubtful if any other horse has been caught by the Hialeah dockers in faster time than Vander Pool made recently, when he galloped three-quarters in 1:12, handily. Vander Pool had a perfect record until just before leaving Maryland, when, after a long lay-off, he finished third to Mabla and Robins Egg when he had 126 pounds up. Flying Heels, winner of the 1929 Pimlico Futurity, evidently is in good condition to begin his Florida campaign, for he has been on the track frequently and his workouts have been of the highest order. Knight Commander was the first horse to run a mile faster than 1:36 during 1931. He won a mile race at Arlington Park in 1:35 and the next time out was beaten by a neck when Sunny Lassie ran a mile in the identical time. , He has been out of , competition for some time, but his Florida trials have been good. Helianthus defeated some of the best sprinters in Maryland during the fall, running three-quarters in 1:11. Panetian defeated some good sprinters in the Jamaica Handicap. The Heathen will probably be found meeting some of these. ! Halcyon and Lightning Bolt may be expected to cut a figure in some of the good races over the middle distances. Halcyon defeated Ormesby in the Continental Handicap at Jamaica and in the Queens County Handicap on the same track he outran a crack band which included St.. Brideaux, Mr. Sponge, Surf Board and Caruso. Lightning Bolt, winner of last years Florida jperby over Spanish Play, Boys Howdy and. ime other pretty good three-year-olds, towed enough later in the year to indicate iat he is going to have some standing I the handicap division this year. Another carload of horses from Tanforan, which arrived Saturday, included S. F. Murphys Precede, Modesto and Stambol, Mrs. Evans Wrack Royal, J. A. McEvoys Jola Shot, Mrs. Mills Cervenna, and a pair of two-year-olds for Fred Kraft.
