AU REVOIR AT THORNCLIFFE » Deedie Easy Winner of Final Days Outstanding Race. « Ideal Weather Conditions Prevail at Toronto — Princess Zelda Outstays Fair Dawn by Inches. ♦ TORONTO, Ont., June 6. — Carrying the silks of J. E. Smallman and racing to expectations, Deedie, from the Canadian-owned establishment, scored a victory in the final feature of the Thorncliffe Breeders and Racing Association when she carried top weight and accounted for the fifth race, which was called the Thorncliffe Purse, in which she was opposed by six others of good grade. It was the best race of an ordinary program, and Deedie was given confident support, which she warranted by following in close attendance of the fast early pace set by the fleet-footed General Lejeune. Deedie moved up from fourth place to displace the C. C. Smithson colorbearer after engaging the latter in a mild brush midway on the second turn under the riding of C. Phillips, was able to come away until at the end she was safely past the winning line a length and one-half in front in one of the fastest races run at the distance here. Happen, from the Mrs. G. Fox stable, by a well timed rush, wrested second position from General Lejeune, with Mrs. R. Pollards Guide Right leading home the three others that were Bright Beauty, from the C. T. Grayson stable; J. Arthurs Berber, and W. L. Newmarchs Silvery. Ideal conditions prevailed for the final program of the spring term of racing at the Leaside course, and it was a crowd above average. Racing was conducted over a fast track, and several close finishes added decided enthusiasm to the matinee. Some of the better grade juveniles furnished the contention for the five furlongs i sprint that was the second offering of the day and it saw Broad Lights, from the Geneseo Stable, earning the first success for the establishment when G. Arnold rode the son of Broadway Jones — Hurry Back II. to a front-running victory. John Davenport, from the Pasadena Stable, was second by a length and one-half, while Seemego, from the William Garth stable, finished third, wresting that position from the tiring H. C. Hatch colt Meany. Twelve sprinters of the cheaper type fur- j nished the contention in the first race, at seven furlongs, and, leading throughout the | intermediate sprint, Precede, racing for S. F. Murphy, a recent arrival from Aurora, earned honors in a blanket finish, in which Continued on second vage. ! ; • " 1 1 1 1 . r , 1 t I I .1 f e - AU REVOIR AT THORNCLIFFE Continued from first page. four of the dozen starters came down to the end of the distance closely locked. At the end Precede received a head decision over My Betty, from the W. S. McCabe stable, while holding a like margin over C W. Bidwills Hidden Thoughts came Jane Ellen, a well favored entrant in the bulky field. Another limit field started when a dozen went to the post for the third race, and there was a surprise with the running when E. J. Reeds Princess Zelda, under a well judged ride by G. Riley and racing grouped in the field, was winner in a bitterly waged stretch duel. Second honors fell to H. Sher- mans consistent mare, Fair Dawn, when she met defeat by the shortest possible margin, and third was accounted for by J. Hoskins Popcorn, which was installed a lukewarm choice. Flying Zeno, after a rough race in the early stages, came from far back after his misfortunes and was a fast going fourth. To avoid being raced off her feet after going into command in the first five furlongs, Riley gave his mount a breathing spell when Friendly Ways and Princely Attention were rushed hard to offer contention and, responding cheerfully when put to a drive, readily regained her previous posi-i tion and, withstanding a hard drive, just lasted to beat Fair Dawn by a nose, while Popcorn was beaten four lengths as he saved third. The fourth race, a split of the third, also furnished a surprise after a limit field con-e tested the mile and one-sixteenth journey when Mrs. J. Badames Darksini, showing greatly improved form over recent outings, captured honors from Upset Lad of the May-I fair Stable, another at liberal odds, while Mrs. M. Eckmans On Leave, the favorite, was under a drive to land the minor share of the spoils when he took the measure of H. G. Bedwells Fair Thorn.
