The recent heavy rains were all that was needed to give the racing strip a firm and fast bottom and trainers took advantage of it to tighten up their charges. John Daniels, trainer of the Southland Stable of Charles Bacharach, called on the majority of his string for good tests and the veteran Playtime reeled off three-quarters in 1:16%. My Hobby, another consistent winner for the establishment, turned three-quarters in 1:15%. Wise Mona, which owner Bacharach named for the Clipsetta Stakes, the ,000 added two-year-old race for fillies that will serve as the opening day attraction, breezed an easy three-eighths in :40. Pass Christian, Cincinnati Trophy eligible, stepped five-eighths in 1:03%. J. P. Sallee had Tom Carr Piatt3 Dominant, a Clipsetta eligible, on the track this morning and breezed five-eighths in 1:05%. The nominations for the seven stakes to be decided during the long meeting were officially closed this morning and sent to the printer. There were no additions to the thirty-nine named for the Derby, and resident manager Russell Sweeney hopes to have the condition book of the first seven days of the meeting ready for distribution to the horsemen in the next few days. With the announcement of the dates for the Arlington Stakes, the Arlington Oaks will conflict with the running of the Latonia Derby, but inasmuch as Albert Sabaths I Say was the only filly named for the Golden Jubilee Derby, the conflict will not take anything away from the famous old Latonia classic. Charles F. Price, presiding steward in charge of racing, is expected to set the dates for the Cincinnati Trophy, Enquirer and Quick Step Handicap and the Latonia Oaks this week. He was awaiting the announcement of the Arlington dates so as to avoid any conflict. During the coming week, several stables that are resting at Churchill Downs and Lexington are due to arrive at Latonia from those points, while early arrivals from Chicago and Bainbridge are expected in the next two weeks.
