TOP FLIGHT UNPLACED . Weight TeNs and Flagstone Is Winner of Delaware Handicap. Whitney Filly Wilts Under Her Own Fast Pace and Drops Back to Last Morfair Second. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., Aug. 30. Flagstone, the four-year-old son of Sun Flag and Dear Maria, which races under the silks of the Linton Farms Stable, was a surprise winner of the old Delaware Han dicap this afternoon. He raced the mile in 1:37 .to win over J. P. Smiths Morfair, while Sylvester W. Labrots Tred Avon was third and C. V. Whitneys Top Flight, champion juvenile of last year, was last of them all. The race had a net value of ,600 to the winner. This was the big event of an interesting card. The sport was conducted under ideal weather conditions and over a fast track. While the winning .of Flagstone occasioned some surprise, he had so much the best of the handicap that it was not as remarkable as at first thought. He was in receipt of twenty-eight and a half pounds from Top Flight, twenty-six and a half from Morfair, and sixteen and a half from Tred Avon. With such weight concessions it is small wonder that he scored. There was another contributing factor. Workman, despite the crushing burden on Top Flight, took her out at a sprinting clip to show the way. She raced to the half in :46, and the six furlongs in 1:11. While she was cutting out this swift pace, Morfair was attempting to race with her. It was small wonder that both should wilt a bit-in the stretch and that the light weight should come along to be the winner. Tred Avon, after being last of the four, outfiri-ished Top Flight, and it was largely because Workman did not give the Whitney filly any chance under his suicidal ride. Cheap maidens to race six furlongs was the first offering and it saw Wayden, from the Geneseo Stable, winner under a drive from Mrs. R. L. Waters Donate. P. S. P. Randolphs Durbaru barely saved third from Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Tweed, which, after being away slowly, had a rough passage. LONG DELAY AT POST. There was a long delay at the post, occasioned by the unruly actions of several in the big field and the start was a fairly good one. Donate lost little time going into a goodly lead and Floor Walker went after him, with Wayden racing along on the rail and in peril of being blocked. This was the order around the first turn, where Donate stole away into a lead of something more than two lengths. Then Wayden found his way through and when the turn for home was reached he was in second place. But Donate was still well clear and it took a long drive for the son of Way-good to wear him down to be the winner by a neck. Durbaru had steadily worked his way up in the running, but he was forced to his best to save third from the fast closing Sun Tweed by a head. Shylock, racing in improved form, was winner of the short course steeplechase for cheap platers, but he came out of the running so badly lamed that Tammaro dismounted, and the horse was led back to the scales. The place went to Knockenarri-gan, and third was the portion of Hatbroom. There were two spillT in the running, when Oui Monsieur went down with Collins at the front field Liverpool, and The Awakening fell with W. Rea at the second turn of the course, at a backfield fence. TRIESTE GOES DOWN. Shylock and Trieste were the ones to cut out the running, but on the second turn of the course Trieste made a bad landing at the water that put him out of the contention, though he did go down. This left Shylock alone in command, and at the same time Knockenarrigan, which had been galloping along in third place, moved up to second, while Naylor and Hatbroom were following him closely. Dragon de Vertu, after showing a flash of speed, dropped back rather badly, while The Awakening and Outlaw were both being badly outrun. It was at the upper end of the field the last turn of the course that Sessa called on Knockenarrigan in an effort to catch Shylock, but the Jones gelding had something left, and he was still eight lengths clear crossing the line. Knockenarrigan saved the place by two and a half lengths from Hat- Continued on twenty-first page. TOP FLIGHT UNPLACED Continued from first page. broom, which readily outgamed Naylor, to take third by four lengths. Both Rea and Collins were not seriously hurt. The Lady Owners Handicap, a five and a half furlong dash for juveniles, brought out a field of six. This went to Wave On, from the Sagamore Stable of Mrs. Amory, with Jacobs Ladder, racing for Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable, second and Mrs. R. L. Waters Fly On third. In his last previous start, the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, Wave On had raced along with as fast a colt as Sandy Bill and this field proved easy for him. After breaking well Bejshak lost no time in rushing the son of Upset into a safe lead and there was no time that he was threatened, and he was over the line winner by four lengths. Jacobs Ladder and True Romance, closely lapped, followed Wave On until well into the stretch and there Fly On saved ground and outfinished True Romance, but he could not catch Jacobs Ladder, which saved the place by a length. True Romance was a length back of Fly On and well back of Mrs. Simms filly came Did She and Caesa"rs Ghost, the only other starters. Larranaga, from the Anall Stable, was not opposed by much in the mile of the fifth race and his score wasone of the easy ones of the afternoon. Taking the lead as he left the stalls he raced the maiden Jim Robin into defeat and then had ample left to withstand a belated ".id from Charles H. Thieriots Scout Master. Jim Robin saved third and the only other starter was K R. Bradleys Bubble Up. Little time was 3t at the barrier and the winner maintaineu a. good pace throughout to dominate the running throughout ami he had something left at the finish, while the other three were done to a turn. John Madigan of the Niagara Racing Association was among the visitors Tuesday afternoon. Mate was returned hei rom Chicago, where he started in thr . .rwtho -ne Gold Cup.
