DEAD HEAT PAY-OFF Dead heats in races are infrequent occurrences and, when they occur, bring about many disputes between bettor and layer. Such was the case in the last race at Hawthorne Monday, Tommy Tickle and Battle Ax came in neck and neck to divide first honors. Money bet at or away from the track, where track odds were accepted, was paid off according to the odds published in Daily Racing Forms chart. Not so where house odds were accepted. Such bets were decided according to the accepted custom at tracks where bookmaking is in vogue. A wager on Tommy Tickle at 15 to 1, would bring 5, which, added to the bet, makes a total of 0 for bettor and layer. This would j be equally divided, each receiving 0. A bet on Battle Ax at 3 to 1, would return 0 to each of the parties concerned. The place betting was not affected. jL.
