JEFFERSON PARK STELLAR EVENTS Regular List of Feature Attractions to Be Run During Winter Meeting, Beginning Thanksgiving Day, November 24 NEW ORLEANS, La., Oct. 17. Jefferson Park, popular New Orleans race course, which opens the winter season in the Crescent City on Thanksgiving day, Thursday, November 24, is offering the usual stakes, which include the Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and Louisiana Handicaps, Martin Behrman Memorial and Jefferson Derby. In addition, there will be the Jefforson Futurity,, the meeting concluding on January 21 with the Jefferson Derby. General manager Robert S. Eddy, Jr., announced there would be no purse less than 00 offered, with 00 claiming and one 00 overnight handicap daily. The Jefferson Derby, offered for the first time last winter at Jefferson Park in lieu of the Louisiana Derby, will carry an added value of ,500. The Derby was inaugurated at Jefferson in 1917 and continued each year until last when a re-arrangement of dates forced the changing of the name to Jefferson Derby. It has been an outstanding race of the winter season and has sent many salient three-year-olds to summer racing as well as winners to the Kentucky Derby and other outstanding three-year-old -stakes. The Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Handicaps will carry an added value of ,200, while the Jefferson Futurity and Lou-siana Handicaps .will be at ,000. The Martin Behrman Memorial, a two-mile event, carries an added value of 00. There will be no nomination or starting fees for any of the stakes racing secretary Reeder announced, the nominations closing three days before the races are to be run. The dates for various stakes as outlined are as follows: Thanksgiving Handicap, November 24; Jefferson Futurity, December 10; Christmas Handicap, December 26; New Years Handicap, January 2; Martin Behrman Memorial, January 7 ; Louisiana Handicap, January 14; Jefferson Derby, January 21. Never before in the history of Jefferson will racing start with such a splendid array of stables and riders. Following the announcement of Jefferson dates, there was a flood of applications for stable room, many being rejected. Some of the stables which have, applied for room are: C. V. Whitney, Wm. Zeigler, Jr., Mose Goldblatt, C. H. Kne-belkamD. Clyde Phillins, J. Bronnenberg, N. W. Burkhart, E. B. Carpenter, F. H. Carpenter, Leo Clous, O. L. Foster, L. W. Johnson, Benny Creech, H. G. Herendeen, E. E. Major, Richard Watts, William Cain, J. Chesney, Rex Cooper, E. J. OConnell, A. J. Pershall, J. Hayes, A. G. Tarn, Dr. E. E. Watson and others. . Horsemen have been notified of assignment or rejection of their stable room applications and general manager urges those turned down not to ship because of lack of accommodations. Late Havana dates has been the cause of an unusual number of requests for room. "We are doing our best to take care of stables which have raced with us in the past," said Mr. Eddy. "In addition, I have new requests from stables which have good horses, and we naturally are trying to take care of them because good racing talent is always welcome. "The late opening of Havana will undoubtedly work in a good measure this year, and I believe we will see many new faces, not only in the horse colony, but tourists as well. Despite conditions around the country, I find business good in New Orleans. I have been assured by our business people they will co-operate in the fullest to make things comfortable for the winter visitors. Therefore, I cannot help but feel optimistia about our meeting." John T. Ireland and Thomas C. Bradley will act as stewards and Julius Reeder will serve as racing secretary.
