FIRE AT C. V. WHITNEY FARM ; Overheated Furnace Results in Destruction of Office and Horse Records. LEXINGTON, Ky., Nov. 14 An overheated furnace early Sunday caused the destruction of the office of the C. V. Whitney farm on the Paris Pike, entailing a heavy loss. Kenneth Kane and another employe, passing the office about 8 a. m., saw smoke coming from a basement window. They broke the window open, but found the smoke so heavy that no use could be made of the fire extinguisher. They summoned help and about a dozen employes succeeded in saving some of the furniture and records. Included in the loss were a portion of the horse records and numerous valuable portraits of famous Whitney horses, done by Miss Kath-erine Wheeler, as well as some rare photographs. The office, perhaps the most complete of its kind in Kentucky, was insured, as were its contents. A temporary office was established Monday in the residence near the brood mare barn. Maj. Louie A. Beard, manager of the Whitney thoroughbred interests, had no estimate of the total damage. The Whitney farm will be the scene Wednesday of this week of a barbecue for the Thoroughbred Club and its guests. The number of horses consigned to E. J. Tranters sale at the Lexington sales paddock for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week was increased today to 592 as George Wingf ield added another seven mares to a supplementary catalog now being prepared. The sales began at 1 oclock Monday afternoon.
