DETROin MEDIOCRE CARD All but the TwoYearOld Race De ¬ voted to Claiming Brigade More Anon Furnishes Surprise and Upset in inin in Beating Semester by a Length LengthIn In Fourth Event DETROIT Mich May 22 After four days of witnessing attractive programs the good sized crowd that visited the Detroit race track this afternoon was treated to a mediocre card which with the exception of the second race for twoyearolds was given over to those from the claiming ranks ranksDespite Despite the unattractiveness of the offer ¬ ing the public enjoyed a fair margin of suc ¬ cess and when C A Marones More Anon was a driving winner of the fourth race it provided the first upset of the afternoon His victory however was only a mild sur ¬ prise and considering that he favors a soft track such as prevailed after a hard rain last night he had a good share of supporters and when he led C N Mooneys Semester by a length there were many that greeted his return to the charmed circle Hasty Belle another lightly regarded was third three quarters of a length back of Semester and a length before Bartering Kate the favorite favoriteA A strong wind aided the sun in whipping the racing strip into good condition but the wind retarded the progress of the horses Continued on twentyfifth page DETROITS MEDIOCRE CARD CARDContinued Continued from first page through the stretch and this accounted for slow time being recorded recordedThere There was a short delay at the start of the fourth race but once aligned Leslie Dronet lost little time in sending More Anon into command He held a clear advantage over Lady Hockberger in the run to the stretch and although he bore out badly in the final sixteenth Semester which had improved his position at a loss of ground was unable to reach the flying leader and was under pressure to best Hasty Belle which held third position throughout After her early challenge Lady Hockberger quit badly in the drive and finished last lastBartering Bartering Kate which was rushed into contention also faltered when the real test came and only managed to lead home Light Echo which was far out of it until reach ¬ ing furlongThe the final furlong The Lowenstein entry of Our David and Walkalong the former carrying the colors of Mrs Grace Lowenstein and the latter racing under the silks of Mose Lowenstein carried off first and third honors at the end of the six furlongs dash that opened the program Hal Price Headleys Panorama second choice to the entry was second a length and a half back of Our David arid four lengths before Walkalong which beat Genfal Joe a length for the minor award Mose Lowenstein saddled his second win ¬ ner this time for Mrs John D Hertz when Twoaday scored her second victory in as many starts Fort Springs was second at the end of the five furlongs that attracted a limit field of juveniles under allowance conditions Third went to Blackbirder BlackbirderLandolt Landolt also completed a double when he sent the sister to New Deal to the front soon after the start and although she bore out slightly entering the stretch the finish found the popular choice two lengths before Fort Springs and well in hand While Fort Springs was under pressure aa she forced the pace Blackbirder was in close quarters entering the stretch and Dark Zeni which came in for strong support saved consider able ground only to falter when put to pressure Scrambled Eggs second choice tired badly after threeeighths threeeighthsAnother Another favorite earned brackets when Lough Port made good in the third race After following the pace of Brown Wisdom for threeeighths the winner ridden by Mor ¬ ris Peters went outside the leader to beat him by two lengths at the end of the six furlongs Two Tricks was third thirdA A field of eight started and while the winner was under good rating as he fol ¬ lowed in the wake of Brown Wisdom Two Tricks was poorly ridden and lost ground the greater part of the trip With the ex ¬ ception of My Letitia which held on gamely after enjoying third place to the final fur ¬ long the others neve threatened the leaders
