MUCH ACTIVITY AT LATONIA Preparations for Summer Meeting of 37 Days Being Rushed No Scarcity of Racing Material with 900 900Horses Horses Estimated to Be on Grounds by byEnd End of Week Everything Ready LATONIA Ky May 22 The Latonia race track fairly bristled with activity this morn ¬ ing as preparations for the opening of the summer meeting of thirtyseven days Sat ¬ urday are being rushed to completion The customary spring application of paint al ¬ ready had been applied and corps of work ¬ ers are busy cutting the lawns cleaning the grounds and generally putting the spacious layout into shape shapeRussell Russell Sweeney resident manager has spent money with a lavish hand to put the track in tiptop order as he is anticipating one of the biggest meetings the Latonia Jockey Club has had in years yearsAt At first it was feared that there would be a paucity of racing material but this fear has been dissipated during the past ten days Besides the horses that wintered here approximately 150 of them shipments have been coming in daily from Louisville Texas and from the various farms through ¬ out the state Today consignments have been coming in hourly hourlyTrack Track superintendent Charles Nolte esti ¬ mated that there will be more than 900 Continued on twentyfifth page MUCH ACTIVITY AT LATONIA Continued from first page horses on the grounds by the end of the week and just now he is wondering how he is going to accommodate all of them During the spring Nolte had constructed two additional barns one accommodating fortyfour horses and the other with twenty six stalls Though erected on a different site they replace the seventystall barn that burned down last winter winterMany Many horsemen made last minute deci ¬ sions to race here in preference to Chicago and Detroit which were expected to attract the thoroughbredsAfter majority of mid western thoroughbreds After first planning to go to Chicago J P Sallee who trains the horses of Thomas and T C Piatt changed his mind and shipped thirteen head to Latonia F C and J G McAtee with eight horses Charles Grayson with three and J J Dolan with seven are among others who cast their lot with the Latonia Jockey Club after first making plans to race at other points pointsMose Mose Goldblatt Cincinnati turfman has one of the largest stables on the grounds He has thirty horses here some of his own and the others he is racing for C V Whit ¬ ney neyJ J D Respess whose horses have been here all spring has twentyfour in his string while other big stables either here or due in the next day or so are those of Roscoe Goose J T Weaver the Cattell Stable J C Ellis R L Stivers R L Baker Parkview Stable George Barnes F P Letellier Dix iana Stud Dick Brooks Kirby Ramsey Johnny Trpxler J C Milam T H McCaf ¬ frey W L Johnson and W F Axton AxtonWith With so great a number of horses on the grounds and with so many of them ready to race Larry Bogenschutz racing secretary is anticipating no difficulty in filling the events he has programmed programmedIn In addition to the overnight features there will be eight stakes and handicaps decided during the thirtyseven day meeting Head ¬ ing the list will be the Latonia Derby worth 10000 in added money to be run Saturday June 30 The others each to carry 2500 in added money are the Inaugural Handi ¬ cap Clipsetta Stakes Cincinnati Trophy Quickstep Handicap Enquirer Handicap In ¬ dependence Handicap and Latonia Oaks All of them have been subscribed to liberally
