VETERAN MR GAIETY SCORES TenYear Old Fox Plater Defeats Own Brother Pat Gaiety Claiming Races Furnish Entertainment lor Woodbine Park Spectators Oshawa Plate Feature TORONTO Ont May 22 With the excep ¬ tion of a juvenile condition affair the pro ¬ gram for the third day of the Ontario Jockey Club was confined to the claiming events Occupying the premier position on the card was the Oshawa Plate for home ¬ bred platers that like to travel a route routeGallant Gallant old Mr Gaiety racing for Fred Fox demonstrated that despite his ten years he still possesses enough of his former class to more than hold his own with op ¬ position of this sort when he triumphed over his sevenyearold full brother Pat Gaiety vhich performs in the interest of W I Newmarch and which trained in Maryland this spring W D Reddys lightly re ¬ garded Princely Pal saved third from an ¬ other neglected factor Killing KillingMr Mr Gaiety was kept closer up than usual in the early stages while Trickys Son and Fess set the early pace Pat Gaiety was under restraint and holding fifth place as the field sped down the back stretch and Mr Gaiety was farther back backAs As the far turn was reached the leaders began to tire and Thomas began to catch his opponents Dougherty made his effort with Pat Gaiety and the latter went up with a rush and showed in front before the turn for home was reached reachedThe The Newmarch colorbearer was well clear before the furlong post was reached but Mr Gaiety had moved up with rapid strides and was safely in second place placeIn In the final eighth the Foxowned plater gained on Pat Gaiety and when taking command began bearing to the inside de ¬ spite Thomas efforts and impeded Pat Gaiety slightly Mr Gaiety increased his lead to a length by the time the finish was reached while a half dozen lengths sep ¬ arated Pat Gaiety and Princely Pal PalAfter After the running Dougherty lodged a claim of foul against the winner but after brief deliberation the stewards permitted the original placing to stand The Grosvenor Plate over the four and onehalf furlongs distance was the intro ¬ ductory race and brought together five juve ¬ niles The Grosvenor was a condition affair for juveniles that had not won two races One of the most thrilling finishes of the meeting occurred when St Moritz finishing fast got up in the final strides to drop his head down in front of Dark Vive with the latter a scant nose in advance of the fav ¬ orite Little Dinah DinahThe The biggest upset of the meeting and the largest mutuel return of the Canadian sea ¬ son to date came in the York Plate a ithree quarters dash when Harry Stewarts Ardawn scored The Arlesian filly rewarded with 14575 for the usual 2 ticket A length and onehalf back of the victorious filly the favorite Andiron was second and the bad acting Sophron was third thirdLeaving Leaving from the inside position Ardawn found room in the first threesixteenths opened up a clear advantage and was never threatened thereafter continuing with good courage in the stretch run Andiron had good speed made a bold effort to keep pace with the winner but was not good enough Sophron worked his way up steadily and had little trouble in taking his share of the purse from Missouri Jim The Alexandra Plate to be run as the sec ¬ ond race Friday and exclusively for Cana ¬ dianbred juveniles will be decided over the four and onehalf furlongs instead of five furlongs distance as called for in the condi ¬ tion book bookJockey Jockey R Morrison attached to the W S Kilmer stable reported ill Tuesday and was forced to cancel his riding engagements
