WILLIAM WOODWARD SILKS Fleam Carries Them to Victory in Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park Dark Winter Finishes Third to Thursday and Kievex in Ornament Handicap Secondary Attraction NEW YORK N Y May 22 Fleam car ¬ ried the silks of William Woodward chair ¬ man of The Jockey Club to an easy victory in the first important filly fixture of the New York season at Belmont Park today when she scored in the Acorn Stakes Dusky Princess a stablemate carrying the silks of the Wheatley Stable finished second and well back of her Mrs W Plunkett Stewarts Lady Reigh saved third from C V Whit ¬ neys High Glee which in her previous effort was third in the Toboggan Handicap The prize carried a net value of 8575 to the winner winnerThe The supporting card for the Acorn was a thoroughly interesting one and with delight ¬ ful weather for the sport another big crowd was out at the Jtfassau County course courseWhile While on the way to the post for the Acorn Hindu Queen the Morton L Schwartz starter fell through a hedge with Haas but no real injury resulted to either the filly or rider riderWhen When the stalls were reached little time was lost and the start was a good one hough Robertson appeared to take up High Glee as she left with the result that she was last of the seven under way Contessa he Mrs John Hertz starter left in full stride and Fleam went after her with Dusky Princess hot far away Robertson after his tardy beginning with High Glee was not able to materially improve his position and t was evident early in the running that the Pharamorid H filly was not going to share in the prize prizeContessa Contessa held to her lead until rounding into the stretch but there Fleam charged on her resolutely and a furlong from the finish had her beaten In the meantime Dusky Princess was steadily making up ground and she too caught the tiring pace ¬ maker Robertson had swung wide with High Glee after interfering slightly with Lady Reigh but he was of no help to the Whitney miss and her chase was a fruitless one In the final furlongs Fleam drew out with little effort and crossed the line the winner by five lengths Dusky Princess had no trouble taking second place and Contessa quit so utterly that Lady Reigh was an easy fourth six lengths before High Glee and then came Mrs Hertz filly fillyThe The Ornament Handicap run as the f if tl race at one mile which attracted a smal but select field brought the big thrill of the day when S Burchs Thursday W Grahams Kievex and Willis Sharpe Kilmers Dark Winter swept over the line in the order named and closely lapped Far back of the battling trio William Woodwards Dominus beat the others othersFrom From a good start Wright sprinted away with Jovius until he had opened up a leac of four lengths He raced along for a first quarter in 23 and reached the half in 46 75 to be five lengths to the good Monel attempted to go with this pace but she soon dropped back and Brother Joe was under restraint and on the outside back of the Labrot mare mareDark Dark Winter slow to begin was leading only one horse Chatmoss and in the back stretch this pair was so far out of the run ¬ ning that it seemed impossible either would reach a contending position Thursday had avoided the early pace and Porter was sav ¬ ing ground on the rail with the son of Mars Kievex still had a long lead as he swung for home but the pace began to tell in the final furlong and Thursday rushing through on the inside moved into second place Walls liad chosen the outside with Dark Winter and the Kilmer colt was closing gallantly The three were lapped seventy yards from the end and in a desperate fin ¬ ish Thursday had his head in front at the line Kievex had only beaten Dark Winter a short head and the rest of the field was five lengths away Dark Winter was best at the end and he undoubtedly would have been winner in a few more strides but his challenge had cometoo late and Porter had an advantage with Thursday when he slipped through on the inside
