EAST HOLDS STRONG HAND FOR TEXAS DERBY 1 AFTER 5,000 PRIZE Roman Soldier and Whizzaway, First- . and Second Picks, Eastern-Owned. Entry of Whiskolo and South Gallant V Not Overlooked Latest New3 Regarding Saturdays Race. - ARLINGTON, Texas, April 17. Not unlike the Kentucky Derby, where the East holds the strong hand with Joseph E. Wide-ners Chance Sun, sportsmen from the Atlantic seaboard today appear to have the third running of the 5,000 added Texas Derby at their mercy. Elwood Sachsenmaier, New Jersey sportsman, who, in partnership with Phil Reuter, will be sending the favorite to the post in Roman Soldier, and W. T. Payne, Pennsylvania and New York mining operator, will furnish Whizzaway, the strong second choice. Roman Soldier clinched his position through virtue of his one and only start here and his wonderful Florida record. It required two victories at the Waggoner course for Whizzaway to gain his strong consideration. Although he turned back South Gallant in his Texas debut, it was not until Tuesday, when the son of Whiskaway led McCarthy and Whiskolo to the finish of the mile test, that Texas fans began to offer their allegiance. Some of the more astute patrons point out that Whiskolo, heretofore regarded as second choice, was making his first start since February and was not over indulged after his slow beginning. They say that George Woolf did not care to put the Dia-volo colt to extreme pressure when he realized that it was a useless effort. Trainer McGarvey let up on the horse that finished second to Gillie in the Santa Anita Derby and it was only recently that Whiskolo was given a rigid preparation. McGarvey said Wednesday morning that he was perfectly satisfied with the colts effort and that he still believes he will win both the Texas and Kentucky Derbys. SOUTH GALLANTS FAST MILE. South Gallant, which, in the event of a fast track, will be Whiskolos running mate, had his final long preparation Wednesday morning. Accompanied by Evening Gown, he ran a mile in 1:41, driving. The son of Gallant Fox, 1930 Kentucky Derby winner, was tried strictly for speed and, from all indications, he will be called upon to be the front runner of the entry. Swinging into his task at the mile post, he reeled off his opening quarter in :22. He covered a half mile in :46 and the three-quarters in 1:13. Naturally, such exacting early speed proved too great and the colt tired at the end of the eight furlongs. However, he cooled out in fine fashion and trainer McGarvey said he appeared none the worsa for it. The Test Purse failed to eliminate any of the five eligibles which opposed Whizzaway. Although Pompous Genie was a distant trailer, trainer J. J. Flanigan had already stated that there was little chance of the horse filling his Saturdays engagement. Charlie Irby, trainer of the Tranquility Farms Cross Ruff, and William Hinphy, whose Dark Woman set the early pace, were both satisfied with their races, Irby stating Wednesday morning that Cross Ruff was a trifle short and Hinphy was holding out for a muddy track. With the exception of South Gallant and Eddie J., which breezed three-quarters in 1:17, and those eligibles which were under colors in the Arlington Handicap, the other members of the probable starting field were indulged with long, slow gallops Wednesday morning. Roman Soldier was on the track early and galloped two miles, and Furfiber was likewise sent that distance. Trainer G. L. Hamilton stated Wednesday that he received word from Wayne D. "Vright, who is now at Churchill Downs aiding in the preparation of Chance Sun, that he would be here Saturday morning and he hoped to add the Texas Derby to his already brilliant 1935 record. Wright, with the start of Wednesdays racing, was the leading rider of America. He will be the only jockey coming here for the nine furlongs race. The other starters will be entrusted to the lads who have engaged in Arlington Downs competition. Tom Keating, part owner and the trainer of McCarthy, Louisiana Derby winner, announced Wednesday morning that he had engaged Charles Landolt to ride the colt. Landolt replaces Paul Keester, who rode McCarthy in the Louisiana Derby, and who directed the colt in his three engagements here.
