THE PETTER, in close quarters on the inside soon after the start, dropped far back of the leaders, but moved up to save ground around the far turn and, coming to the outside on the stretch turn, easily headed the field in the last furlong going away, and pulled up slightly lame. BRIMFIELD raced well up from the start and took a short lead rounding the stretch turn, but could not resist the winner. HIGH SUN was never far away and, although losing ground by racing on the outside, went well to the finish. AFRIDI closed a gap. CHROMIUM, SWEEP QUICK and MITTENS dropped back when the real racing began. Overweight Nugent, 2 pounds; Riposo, 4. FIFTH RACE 1 MILE AND 70 YARDS. Lady Seth, April 22, 19311:414102. Marin Handicap. MARCLEAVE, taken under restraint after getting his position, came fast while saving ground. He hugged the rail in the stretch, raced up to the early leaders in the final furlong and, coming out very slightly near the end to interfere with DOUBLE FOUR, won in a drive. DOUBLE FOUR bore out on the first turn, but retained command and, withstanding several challenges trom MAUVE DECADE, went well to the finish despite meeting with interference from the winner in the final sixteenth. MAUVE DECADE bore out on the turns, raced well out from the rail all the way, lost much ground, and weakened after being unable to head DOX-BLE FOUR. NATALIE ALICE was going well at the finish. FESTOON tired badly. Overweight Double Four, 3 pounds; Mauve Decade, 2. SIXTH RACE 5 1-3 FURLONGS. Chatterton, Nov. 17, 19231:05-4121. Quickaway Of O-g O Purse. Purse 00. 3-year-olds and upward. STAINFORTH moved up steadily on the outside of GREENSPRING LAD approaching the stretch turn and, crowding the latter after entering the stretch, drew out in the last sixteenth. GREENSPRING LAD had the most early speed, was in close quarters on the inside of STAINFORTH when headed by the latter in the stretch, and went fairly well to the finish. PROCLIVITY closed ground in the last quarter and was going well at the finish. R. D. POWERS had early speed. NILUS showed an inclination to back up while in the stall gate and, off slowly, was soon crowded back, losing all chance of winning, although making up some ground in the stretch. KENT ran below his best form. ST. STEPHENS tired as if short. Scratched 24519 Lois Pan, 104; 24479 Malmaison, 102. - SEVENTH RACE 1 MILE AND 70 YARDS. Lady Seth, April 22, 19311:414102. Winner entered to be claimed for ,750. WENT TO POST 5:11. AT POST 5 minutes. Start good and slow. Won driving; second and third the same. SLAPPED went to the front at once, opened up a good lead on the back stretch and increased his advantage around the far turn, but had to be hard ridden in the stretch when DARK WINTER challenged, and barely lasted to win. DARK WINTER acted badly at the post and was started from outside the gate and, dashing into contention on the outside rounding the first turn, was taken under slight restraint to make a strong move in the stretch and just missed. RED ENSIGN was never far away and showed a creditable effort. BOILING POINT had early speeed, but weakened a trifle in the stretch. TORO FLIGHT was pulled up soon after the start and, taken to the rail, dropped far back of the field, making up some ground in the last quarter to finish well, but was never dangerous. SAN RAMON, well rated in the early part, came fast when called upon in the last quarter to challenge MERELY near the finish and win narrowly. The latter fought it out with BONAGAI for the early leadership, took a short lead when the latter began to tire and, going well to the finish, would have won under stronger handling. BEHEMOTH, probably best, was shut off while racing on the inside after entering the back stretch, then came to the outside and was carried wide on the stretch turn, but was full of run at the end. BE MINE was always well up and showed a fairly good effort. ORILEY weakened in the stretch and stopped badly in the run home. SICKLEBILL lacked speed at all times and turned in an exceptionally poor effort. Overweight Oriley, 2 pounds. Corrected weight Be Mine, 112. NINTH RACE 1 1-8 MDLES. Wirt G.
