TOP ROW STILL CHOICE Mighty Baroni Star Public Favorite for Marchbank Handicap. Azucar, Thursday and Indian Broom Among Eligibles for Saturdays x 0,000 Tanforan Feature. SAN BRUNO, Calif., April 10. Regardless of Indian Brooms rather sensational race in the Peninsula Handicap, Saturday, Top Row, the mighty atom of the Baroni stable, remains the outstanding favorite for the 10,000 added Marchbank Handicap, which will have its initial running tomorrow, the final day of the Tanforan meeting. While Indian Broom held the spotlight last Saturday, Top Row came back into the glare of the calcium early this week. Traveling the full mile and an eighth Marchbank distance, the son of Peanuts went the first quarter in , :2l73, the half mile in :49, the three-quarters in 1:14, the mile in 1:39 and the mile and an eighth in 1:52. He was restrained all the way. Top Rows move was exceptionally pleasing to Mrs. A. A. Baroni, wife of the owner and Jimmy Hexham, stable foreman. Mrs. Baroni has been present at all of Top Rows training gallops since her husband has been confined to the hospital. WRIGHT ON TOP ROW. Jockey Wayne D. Wright, outstanding American rider, will pilot Top Row in the j Marchbank Handicap. Wright is very fond of Top Row and it is said that he gets on one of his pet peeves when owner Baroni "considers engaging any other jockey to guide the gallant little animal. Another jockey for one of the Marchbank Handicap contenders was announced recently when Tommy Griffin engaged Lester Bal-aski to ride R. A. Moores Thursday in the big race. Balaski was originally slated to ride Riskulus, was mentioned as the rider of Azucar when Riskulus was sent back to the farm and was finally engaged for Thursday. He replaces jockey V. Thompson on .the Moore horse. It is understood that trainer Griffin was satisfied with Thompson, but that owner Moore wished Balaski to ride, but Thompson will be paid for the mount as he had been engaged. Shortly after the running of the Marchbank Handicap, Balaski will leave for Churchill Downs, having been engaged to ride one of the Bradley horses in the Kentucky Derby. INDIAN BROOMS CHANCE. While on the subject of the Blue Grass classic, there is a possibility that Maj. Austin Taylors Indian Broom may take part in that event. Upon his race in the Marchbank Handicap depends whether or not the son of Brooms will be shipped to Kentucky. Indian Brooms race in last Saturdays Peninsula Handicap was a fine one and if he can defeat Top Row, Azucar and the other-stars in the Marchbank Handicap he will likely be Louisville bound. It would be a bitter pill for Bob Smith, widely heralded Brook-meade Stable trainer, to swallow should Indian Broom go east and make a good showing in the Kentucky Derby. Smith did not regard Indian Broom as of Derby caliber. Special Agent, ace of the Major Taylor stable and one of the strong contenders for the Bay Meadows Handicap, took a light workout recently. Trainer Cannon sent him cantering a slow half mile in :53. The speedster is coming along fine following his hoof ailment.
