HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 16. Ten horses in eight different interests have been named from the original list of thirty-three nominations, to compete in the Philadelphia Handicap, ,500 added special at Havre de Grace tomorrow. The fixture, of which Saturdays running will be the twenty-fifth, is at one mile and one-sixteenth and the prospective starters are a representative band possessed of sufficient class to justify the purse offering and maintain the high standard of the race which has returned among other aces such winners as Exterminator, Equipoise, Sun Beau, and Boniface. The entry in todays race consists of Chance Ray and Two Bob representing Mrs. Emil Denemark and Elmer Dale Shaffers Floradora. The time record for the fixture was established by Stand Pat, winner in 1935, when the son of John P. Grier negotiated the distance in 1:44. Hal Price Headley"s Whopper has been assigned top weight of the field. Under 122 pounds, the giant son of Pharamond II. and Romance will carry seven pounds more than his nearest rival in the matter of weights, Martin B. Townsends White Cockade. Whoppers most recent claim to fame was his winning performance in the Hialeah Inaugural when under the same weight he is asked to carry today, he whirled six furlongs in 1:094 to establish a track record. Since that race he has been somewhat of a failure when he did not live up to his reputation as a sprinter and tomorrow will be asked to show his prowess over the longer distance. Blinkers will again be a part of his equipment tomorrow. The hood, which he wore in his record-breaking effort will be used again in an effort to bring out a top performance. WHITE COCKADE DANGEROUS. White Cockade is certain to supply stiff competition in the field if he runs kindly. In his seasonal debut at Havre de Grace on Wednesday the son of Diavolo and White Favor impressed by his victory in a six-furlong event in which he carried a claiming tag of ,000. He came from behind a fast pace to score in 1:12 and was worked out the mile In 1:40. The ease with which he accomplished his trial left the impression that he would be ready for his race tomorrow. White Cockades previous appearance was a smashing second in the Orange Blossom Handicap at Tropical Park in which he was defeated in track record time by Conte. In his winning effort here he carried 126 pounds and in the Florida race his burden was six Continued on twenty-sixth pagej ,500 MARYLAND RACE Continued from first page. pounds less so that his weight today should not prove troublesome. Keen interest is being displayed in the appearance in the race of W. J. Hirschs filly Columbiana. The winner of the Widener Challenge Cup has not b m raced since that outing, but she has been kept on edge by excellent trials over this track. Her final prep for the Philadelphia was an easy mile in 1:42 on Thursday. She picks up nine pounds over her weight in her corking victory in the Widener and her ability to handle the increased impost may be the deciding factor in her effort tomorrow. , LIKES A DISTANCE. J. W. Y. Martins Dark Hope has been allotted 114 pounds in the Philadelphia. The aged son of Traumer did not impress by his showing in his seasonal debut in the Harford Handicap, but he has always shown an inclination to favor a distance of ground, and the Harford was obviously only a conditioner for him. Araho Stables New Deal reached the peak of his condition when he scored in the Griff wood Handicap here last Wednesday. In that mile and seventy yards test he came from behind the pace of the leaders to Several of his opponents score going away. fn that race are scheduled to meet him again In the Philadelphia and. under 110 pounds he will carry two pounds less than his weight in the Griffwood. . The Denemark pair of Chance Ray and Two Bob will be making their first showing since their Florida campaign. Two Bob was not disgraced in her race in the Widener, and previous to that effort she was winner of a Grade "A" handicap. TWO BOB FAST. Her final distance trial for the Philadelphia was a mile in 1:42 over this track earlier this week, and this morning she was sent an easy half mile in :iS. Her weight is 108 pounds, while Chance Ray gets in under 103 pounds. Chance Rays final prep was a half mile in the same time as his stablemate. In her only showing locally this season Elmer Dale Shaffers Floradora was badly beaten in the Griffwood Handicap, but the filly had a rough trip in that race and can do much better. Under 110 pounds, a peak performance would make her dangerous. The other two entrants arc Kievex and Kenty, the light weights of the field. Both of these finished in the wake of. New Deal in his victory Wednesday and appear to be up against stiff opposition. Their one hope appears to be in the fact that they will be favored by light weights. The program supporting the Philadelphia is headed by the Page Brook Handicap, in which seven shifty sprinters have been named to contest six furlongs. The other races carry the claiming clause.
