THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 FAIRY HILL, chestnut gelding, by Messenger Star Fairy, by The Satrap; property of Foxcatcher Farms of William DuPont, Jr. He gained general recognition as a dangerous candidate for the, Kentucky Derby and other three-year-old specials by winning the 0,000 Santa Anita Derby in February. He has been given a good rest and should be ready for spring racing. By NOKR1S HOYDEN j i Fairy Hill compiled a fair record in his five starts as a two-year-old; but he atided to his promise as a three-year-old by winning the 0,000 Santa Anita Derby, in which he defeated a large field that included several other likely horses of the same age and has a good start on most of his contemporaries. - The chestnut gelding by Messenger Star Fairy, by The Satrap, has the breeding for stamina, and he certainly demonstrated in the Santa Anita Derby running that he was far better than a sprinter, finishing stoutly in that mile and one-sixteenth event Trainer Richard E. Handlen started the Foxcatcher Farms fellow for the first time last May in a maiden race of four and one-half furlongs, at Belmont Park, in which he was second all the way, losing to John P. War by a length and a half, while beating Camisado and Mahdi among others in the large field. In a similar event soon after Fairy Hill made up ground slowly to lose a nose decision to Mahdi as he finished ahead of Above Far, Chicolorado and other promising youngsters. In a third affair under similar conditions, the Messenger gelding stepped the distance in the fast time of :514 to defeat Jungle Chase by four lengths as Sun-phantom was second and Winning Chance third. Given a chance in the Tremont Stakes, Fairy Hill rushed up to join Airflame at the furlong pole, but couldnt hold the fleet son of Ariel and lost the five furlongs dash by a half length, but he defeated Fencing, Scintillator and other good colts. The time was :5954 for the five furlongs, and he was in receipt of five pounds from Airflame. Fairy Hill was called upon to engage such as War Admiral and Maedic In the Great American Stakes over the six furlongs course at Aqueduct, but he wore down the Glen Riddle colt in the stretch to triumph by a length and one-half in the creditable time, of 1:12, He had up 113 pounds, "getting only two pounds each from War Admiral and Maedic He was unable to be trained further during the season and did not start again until a mile race over a sloppy track at Santa Anita in February when he showed but little. However, Fairy Hill was in excellent condition for the Derby in which he gave smashing performance. . From a breeding standpoint, much may be expected of Fairy Hill. His sire, MesB senger, was a good race horse and has met with much success in the stud, considering his opportunities. He possesses the noted Fair . Play Rock Sand cross. . Fairy Hills dam was by The Satrap, he by The Tetrarch, a line noted for its speed, but the second dam, Fair Star, was the leading two-year-old money winner of her year, with the Pimlico Futurity and other races to her credit. The daughter of Wrack furthermore, is a half-sister to the Preakness winner, High Quest. Their dam, Etoilc Filahte, was by Fair Play, giving Fairy Hill a double cross to that sire which has had such a marked influence on American breeding. The breeding of the Foxcatcher prospect also suggests that he will develop into a better three-year-old than he was a juvenile, so his chances of making trouble in future important contests seem exceedingly bright. Being a gelding eliminates him from a race like the Belmont Stakes, but he will have plenty of opportunities in the Derby, American Derby, Arlington Classic and similar contests.
