POMPOON BEATEN IN BIGGEST UPSET OF SEASON DERBY CHOICE FAILURE Melodist Wins Wood Memorial With Favorite in Fifth Place Wheatley Stable Colt New Threat Threatfor for Derby Honors Sir Damion DamionTakes Takes Second Place JAMAICA L I N Y May 1 Another Kentucky Derby hope was shattered in the running of the Wood Memorial at Jamaica today when J H Louchheims Pompoon was soundly whipped and another Richmond came into the field when Melodist from the Wheatley Stable under a masterly ride by Johnny Longden was winner At the heels of the son of Royal Minstrel came Marshall Fields Sir Damion and another two lengths away was Jewell Dorsett the Joe W Brown filly which was raced through the winter season Walter Carters Clodion was fourth and then came Pompoon which had gone to The time for the mile and seventy yards was 142 and the prize added another 19150 to the earnings of the Wheatley Sta j ble colt and at the same time made him a worthy eligible for the Kentucky Derby to be decided next Saturday at old Churchill Downs Jamaica never before entertained such a crowd and never before offered such a card of races Some 25000 thrilled to the stretch rush of the Wheatley Stable colt when he caught Sir Damion and while the race meant the dethronement of an idol a new cham ¬ pion was never more uproariously acclaimed acclaimedCLODION CLODION DELAYS START STARTClodion Clodion caused some delay at the post but the start was a good one and Chicolorado the Greentree Stable hope was particularly alert as was Sir Damion and Rudie also left in full stride Pompoon moved from his stall smoothly and when he had his position Richards took him under slight restraint as the first quarter was run in 23 Melodist had begun slowly and the only one back of him leaving the stalls was Merry Maker MakerPompoon Pompoon was bothered slightly on the first turn but it was of no consequence and he was well within striking distance when the back stretch was reached but Richards was wisely waiting with him after finding ample racing room roomArcaro Arcaro when the back stretch was reached had Chicolorado next to the rail and under restraint as Sir Damion took a lead of two lengths and under steady re ¬ straint Rudie soon had enough and was dropping back but Jewell Dorsett was rac ¬ ing along not far from the leaders and saving ground on the inside Clodion was also showing speed and at the half mile ground he was the one to lead the others in pursuit of the Marshall Field colt coltGAINS GAINS GROUND GRADUALLY GRADUALLYAll All this time Melodist was making up ground gradually on the outside of the big field but he was so far from the contention that he attracted no attention attentionAfter After Rudie was through Clodion was next to tire He had been blocked as Arcaro made a move to send him up on the inside and that was the end of his chance Clodion then began to shorten stride and Richards after turning from the back stretch called Continued on twentyseventh vane POMPOON BEATEN IN INBIGGEST BIGGEST UPSET OF SEASON Continued from first vage on Pompoon and when he did not respond promptly swung his whip He was racing along on the outside and before the stretch was reached it was apparent he was beaten beatenSir Sir Damion had killed off all the early contention long before the stretch was reached and he turned into the stretch with a lead of daylight By that time Jewell Dor sett had found her way through on the rail to be second and then Melodist was soon passing the others on the outside outsideA A furlong out he was close after the son of Sir Gallahad IIL and in the last furlong raced past to win going away by a length Sir Damion was two lengths before Jewell Dorsett and she in turn led Clodion by a length with Pompoon at the heels of the Carter colt coltWHOPPER WHOPPER EASY WINNER WINNERThe The utter defeat of Pompoon was at least a big surprise to the students of form There was no stage of the running that he showed the form that was his when he was winner of the Paumonok Handicap the opening day of the New York season and on this race his stock for the Kentucky Derby is sure to tumble materially No real excuse could be found for him in the running of the race and with his defeat it would seem that War Admiral and Reaping Reward remain as the natural choices for the big prize prizeWhopper Whopper the giant son of Pharamond II and Romance was an easy winner of the Jamaica Handicap the six furlongs com ¬ panion feature to the Wood Perfectly rid ¬ den by Harry Richards he made his run ¬ ning through the final quarter to win going away from Mrs Graham Lewis consistent filly Little Miracle and she readily took third from John Simonettis Sgt Byrne Back of these came Tintagel Snark Only One and Rebellion making the field one of the most remarkable ones of the year yearWhopper Whopper caused some delay at the post and when the break came while Snark and Sgt Byrne were off so badly as to be handi ¬ capped the others were in good alignment Little Miracle was first to show from the stalls but she was almost at once headed by Rebellion and then Tintagel moved into the picture with a rush Whopper was soon go ¬ ing smoothly tack of the fast pace and Richards was content with his position having the big fellow under a slight re ¬ straint straintIt It was going to the stretch turn that Tintagel ranged alongside Rebellion to set a pace which made him stop and it was not until then that Richards moved with Whopper He chose the outside and at the same time Little Miracle moved up gallantly on the inside Only One had been caught in close quarters shortly after the break and was not in the hunt but Sgt Byrne had been rushed up from his slow start and was coming into the contention There was not much contention in the final sixteenth when Whopper drew away to have a winning margin of two lengths Little Miracle stood off the rush of Sgt Byrne to take the place by a like distance and then came Tintagel which had weak ¬ ened badly after having been run down by Whopper WhopperThis This race coming after his victory in the Philadelphia Handicap at Havre de Grace would indicate that Whopper has been brought back to his best form by Duval Headley and he will be given serious con ¬ sideration in his coming engagements engagementsAfter After taking down the Wood with Melo ¬ dist Johnny Longden came right back in the mile and seventy yards of the sixth race for those of class C to win with the Howe Stables Twice making it a double for those silks Mrs C Oliver Iselins Shining Sun raced to the place with Hugh W Jack ¬ sons Bulwark an easy third over Ann ORuley
