LATEST DERBY GALLOPS Sceneshifter Impressive in One Mile and a Quarter Gallop Howard Establishment More Confi ¬ dent Since Victory of Fencing Twelve Certain Derby Starters LOUISVILLE Ky May 1 With the race now only a week away twelve virtual cer ¬ tain starters and with a half dozen others still with a chance to qualify as contest ¬ ants on the grounds the hum of activity on the part of Kentucky Derby candidates becomes more intense at Churchill Downs where the 50000 special will be renewed next Saturday SaturdayFor For days Derby eligiblcs have been mo ¬ nopolizing the training spotlight and this morning was no exception as at least three outstanding candidates and several others of lesser importance were breezed through brisk trials on a good track trackThe The higher ranking hopefuls to work were Col H Maxwell Howards Scene shifter William DuPont Jrs Fairy Hill and Townsend B Martins Court Scandal Those of secondary importance in action included Raoul Walshs Sunset Trail II J B Respess Main Man E F Woodwards Valted and A C Ernsts Albubble AlbubbleFor For impressiveness Sceneshifter which is Continued 6n tioentyslxtJi page LATEST DERBY GALLOPS Continued from first page trained by Earl Sande probably carried off honors though Fairy Hill performed in smart fashion Court Scandal had an easier trial than the former two Sceneshifter ran a mile and a furlong in 154 breezing Fairy Hill a similar distance in 158 breezing while Court Scandal went a mile in 150 running against an almost choking hold holdSunset Sunset Trail H broke from the starting gate and went three furlongs in 36 handily for his first spin over the Derby track Also starting from the gate Main Man negotiated the chute mile which has but one turn in 142 driving after exhibit ¬ ing keen early speed Albubble was another to go nine furlongs He was timed in 156 The Ernst horse worked in handy fashion and for the last fiveeighths had Alkit as a companion companionValted Valted was seen in a speed trial with Calculator the two going five furlongs which Valted traversed in 101 handily to 101 for Calculator CalculatorFINE FINE PERFORMANCE On the track early at a time when the I course was a little more holding than later in the training period Sceneshifter was the first of the important candidates to work and Sande sent him into action at the fur ¬ long post Under good rating the son of Sickle ran the first quarter in 23 the half mile in 48 threequarters in 114 and the mile in 141 Sandes instructions were that Sceneshifter open his trial at a speedy clip and then be restrained at a smooth pace thereafter and the exercise rider implicitlyUpon followed orders implicitly Upon completing the nine furlongs in l5446 the Howard threeyearold galloped out the full Derby route of a mile and a quarter in 209 The splendid trial in ¬ creased enthusiasm in the Howard camp where hopes have been running high since the victory of the stables secondary Derby eligible Fencing in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland Thursday Sceneshifter cooled out in good fashion and unless plans for him are altered will not be seen under silks until Derby day It was an off day in the training program of Fencing FencingFAIRY FAIRY HELL ATTRACTS ATTRACTSMr Mr DuPonts Santa Anita Derby winner Fairy Hill looked good as he had his intro ¬ duction to the Downs racing strip He made his appearance about one hour after Sceneshifter and trainer R E Handlen pre ¬ scribed an easy trial for the Messenger gelding Never released from a strong hold the Delaware candidate after turning the nine furlongs in 158 jogged out the Derby distance in 214 For the opening quarter his time was 24 and the half mile was caught in 49 After completing threequarters in 116 he returned to the eighth post from which he started to com ¬ plete a mile in 144 144Court Court Scandal running at a much easier pace than either Sceneshifter or Fairy Hill and also having his first feel of the Downs footing was sent to the main course for his training The son of Royal Minstrel started with a quarter in 27 but slightly improved his speed in the next quarter to complete four furlongs in 52 His time for threequarters was 120 In his workout which commenced in the schooling gate Main Man started as if he were going to break all kinds of training records but after threequarters his speed diminished woefully In leaving the gate the Respess threeyearold stumbled but quickly regained his stride He went a first quarter in 23 sped on with burning speed to put thrfee lurldrigs behind him in 34 arid then rounded out half the distance in 46 Five furlongs were covered by the Erlanger nominee in 59 and then while his stride began to shorten reached the threequarters marker in 113 His time for seveneighths
