Here and There on the Turf Wood Determines New York YorkHand Hand Eastern Horse to Be Derby DerbyChoice Choice Sceneshifter Gains New NewFriends Friends Downs Off to Pleasing Start Now that the Wood Memorial Handicap has gone into history and the makeup of the New York delegation to the Kentucky Derby has been practically determined only the running of the Derby Trial tomorrow may be necessary to determine within one or two horses the field that will go post ward in Saturdays renewal of Americas most popular horse race Those candidates at the Louisville course which will not race for their final qualifying tests will be called upon for stern workouts these next few days probably over the Derby route of a mile and onequarter As in the past the back stretch at the Downs will be crowded with horsemen and just ordinary railbirds viewing the Derby hopes as they go through their speed tests The arrival of the Derby horses from New York which will occur about noon Monday also will be an occasion that will strike up much interest interestWhether Whether it is Pompoon or War Admiral an eastern horse seems almost sure to rule the favorite The West may have the larger number of starters but none of its prospects have come up to the engagement so far in the manner of the Belmont Futurity winner or Glen Riddle star War Admiral was a com ¬ paratively early arrival at Churchill Downs being shipped there right after his galloping victory in the Chesapeake Stakes more than a week ago So far he has impressed Louis ¬ ville observers with the handy fashion in which he handled himself and he will not lack for support among Kentuckians even though most of his good record was estab ¬ lished at Havre de Grace Because Clyde Van Dusen a son of Man o War won the Derby and Pompey sire of Pompoon was badly beaten in the Bubbling Over year the Louisville experts as a whole are giving War Admiral the edge edgeFencings Fencings victory in the Blue Grass Stakes wyer Billionaire Brooklyn and others has has7ought 7ought new importance to Sceneshifter the her Derby candidate of Maxwell Howard because the son of Sickle and Stage Craft is generally conceded to be a superior per ¬ former to the Chance Shot gelding This opinioa is shared by Earl Sande trainer of the two horses Sceneshifter met with plenty of trouble in the running of the Fla ¬ mingo Stakes but the following Saturday he ran the mile and a furlong at Hialeah Park in 148 missing the track record by one fifth of a second He won off by himself while under strong restraint and could have bettered the mark under any sort of press ¬ ure The record was set by Brevity which went on to Louisville to lose the Derby by a head to Bold Venture after suffering inter ¬ ference at the start and losing considerable ground in the stretch Continued on twentyseventh page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page Galsun is to be given one more chance by trainer Frank J Kearns and if the big Calu ¬ met Farm colt does not show anything in the Derby Trial he will be an absentee on Saturday The son of Gallant Fox has worked well enough to have beaten any mans horse but he just wouldnt perform in the afternoon although it is admitted by his connections that the slow condition of the Keeneland track Thursday was against him Kearns is hopeful that the transfer of Galsun from the farm to the race track will make a change in the colts attitude toward the business at hand otherwise no more may be heard of the Calumet horse until late in the season Failure of the colt to come through has proven the source of great disappointment to Warren Wright who is one of the most anxious owners in the sport to win the Derby DerbyChurchill Churchill Downs opened its spring meet ¬ ing of nineteen days Saturday in a fashion that augurs well for the entire session if the weather behaves particularly during the latter half of Derby week as the number of outoftown visitors increases None of the outstanding Derby hopefuls went to the post on the opening program as has been the case so frequently in the past and their appearance in the Trial Purse over the mile distance Tuesday will be the signal for an unusually large weekday crowd On the following afternoon the Bashford Manor Stakes will be contested and this event also should have the effect of attracting a good crowd to Churchill Downs By this time the meeting will have gained full momentum and Thursday and Friday should take care of themselves the latter day being the one set for the arrival of special trains from New York and other important cities
