OHARA SILKS IN FRONT Mucho Gusto in HardEarned Tri ¬ umph in Narragansett Handicap Zoic Head Behind Araho Racer Crowd of 30000 on Hand for forNew New England Opening PAWTUCKET R I May 1 Mrs Walter E OHaras silks were victorious in the fea ¬ ture race at Narragansett this afternoon when Mucho Gusto swept up with a cyclonic rush in the final eighth of a mile to be Tiome in front in the six furlongs Narragansett Handicap main attraction on the excellent program that marked the opening of the New England season At the end the greatly improved son of Marvin May was a neck clear of H E Engers Zoic a horse he beat only a head in the Rowe Memorial Today Mucho Gusto carried 119 pounds and Zoic had seven less in the saddle Bill Farns worth under the jacket of Mrs Marian Cas sidy was third two and a half lengths back of the runnerup and the same margin in front of Erin Torch TorchEddie Eddie Smith rode the winner and had to put up a great exhibition of horsemanship j to get him home on the front end His strong finish from the eighth pole to the wire was as pretty a piece of whip riding as has been seen at any track this year Thirty yearThirty thousand fans were on hand for the opening program which was decided on a perfect spring day Including the feature race the crowd had wagered 456612 456612AWAY AWAY TO PERFECT START STARTStarter Starter Buddy Wingf ield making his debut here had the field off to a perfect start in the Narragansett just as he had dispatched them faultlessly in all of the previous races The early speed horse Allen Z went to the Continued on twentysixth page 0HAR A SILKS IN FRONT Continued from first page lead immediately only to meet tragedy on the turn where he broke down badly As Knott attempted to pull him up he was un ¬ seated but was not injured When Allen Z broke down first Zoic and then Bill Farnsworth which had been peg ¬ ging the pace moved into the van Mucho Gusto had been third but was well back as they straightened out for home At the head of the stretch it appeared that Bill Farnsworth was a mortal lock for he was drawing off with every stride But as they thundered past the furlong post Smiths gad began to come down on Mucho Gustos flanks and the horse streaked up on the inside in a rush that was not to be denied Even at the sixteenth post his task seemed hopeless When they were seventy yards out it seemed he could not get up but he did and he was going away at the end endThe The terrific drive in the stretch killed off Bill Farnsworth and Zoic went to the front as the winners charge began He almost i stayed there long enough Bill Farnsworth was an easy third over the fastcharging Erin Torch whose challenge came too late lateThe The race was run in 111 excellent time considering the fact that the track was a bit dead from recent rains rainsLittle Little Dinah under a groundsaving ride from Ralph Eccard stole through on the rail at the head of the stretch to take the lead and drove on gamely to the finish to whip H Engers Philippi Boy in the six fur ¬ longs event that opened the New England season Royal Bird from the stable of Miss Mary White finished third two lengths back of the leading pair Dedication was fourth in the field of a dozen Die Hard a horse that has repeatedly outworked Lady Higloss in the morning hours was made an 8 to 5 choice for the event He was rated back of the leaders to the stretch turn where he charged up fast on the outside appearing to be a lock midway of the turn for home Then he went back rapidly to wind up sixth
