Here and There on the Turf r rPompoon Pompoon Will Try War Admiral Again AgainConnections Connections Have New Hopes HopesFlying Flying Scot Mosawtre Ran Well WellDay Day Best in Pimlicos History War Admiral has traversed twothirds of the way to Americas triple crown and a victory in the Belmont Stakes on June 5 will make the mighty atom from Glen Riddle the third horse to achieve this honor His prin ¬ cipal opponent in the mile and onehalf classic promises to be none other than Pom ¬ poon which ran such a race that his connec ¬ tions undoubtedly have the belief that with a trifle more luck in the Preakness running he would have been the victor instead of the second horse As the son of Man o War and Brush Up by Sweep was away fast from his inside post position Pompoon was in a tangle as Mosawtre bore over on him and this incident at the start may have cost Jerome Louchheims star as much as a length Wayne Wright soon had him in his stride however and the son of Pompey and Oonagh was charging on the leaders going to the lower turn turnIn In fact Pompoon was moving so swiftly that Wright had to reach for another hold and ease him to escape blocking as the field went into the turn Heading into the back stretch he was several lengths back of War Admiral with horses on all sides of him Room was available however and Wright sent him forward with a rush to gain second place at War Admirals heels as the field left the back stretch At this point Charles Kurtsinger called on the Riddle colt for the first time and he widened out on Pompoon to the extent of a half length Kurtsinger had him well out from the rail as if select ¬ ing what he considered the better going but Wright tried the inner route to save ground and this move brought Pompoon to War Admirals throatlatch as the two horses straightened out for the stretch battle that had Pimlicos greatest crowd in a frenzy of excitement excitementAt At this new challenge Kurtsinger acted as if to use his whip on War Admiral but he thought better of it and only shook his bat in front of his mount This was sufficient for the Riddle atom to give freely of his speed as Pompoon was under severe left handed whipping from Wright This urging brought the Louchheim colt up to even terms with War Admiral entering the final six ¬ teenth and Kurtsinger had to push on the son of Man o War with all his strength but he was there with that final ounce of class to draw away in the final few strides The distance separating the two duelists at the wire was a short head a margin small enough to make Louchheim Wright and trainer Cyrus Field Clarke believe that Pom ¬ poon might have won but for his trouble at the start and near the first turn Pompoon certainly may be expected to try War Ad ¬ miral again in the Belmont if all goes well with him himWhile While they were well beaten by the two leaders Flying Scot and Mosawtre were others in the Preakness field that flashed good efforts The large James Healy said before the race that he was shooting for fourth money and would be tickled pink to get third honors which John Hay Whitneys Whitneyso5S4yJVj o5S4yJVj 3 uiMt colt collected by being the runnerup after the opening quarter and allowing no other horses to pass him after Pompoon went up to challenge Through the stretch the son of The Porter held on better thari the others gs thjey thjeyrop rop ed away from him Mosawtre is still improving and under a stronger and more experienced rider than Hubert Le Blanc his Preakness performance probably would have been considerably better The Louisiana lad had difficulty in holding the On Watch colt off the early paqe and 4n rating him along otherwise Mosawtre would have gone more powerfully Over the Top lost more ground than any and he finished in a manner to cause his new owner to 1 yCiPMwiK on thirtyfirst page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page believe that he should earn his purchase price some time during the season seasonPreakness Preakness Day was the greatest in the history of the Maryland Jockey Club from a financial standpoint A record crowd was present and the wagering reached 1059635 to give the meeting an average that missed 400000 by only a few hundred dollars dollarsThis This success is encouraging Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt more than ever in his efforts to have a new stand constructed at Pimlico He believes the Preakness can be made a race that will draw as well as the Kentucky Derby but that it cannot be done until Pim licos accommodations are vastly improved The Maryland Jockey Clubs new vicepresi ¬ dent hopes to be able to convince his fellow directors that the new stand should be con ¬ structed this summer so as to be available for the fall meeting and because of the fine meeting just closed he may not have JBO much trouble in doing this
