SUNANAIR WINS C HANDICAP t JFriumphs in Thrilling Finish With Brown Twig at Belmont Park Bain Before Opening Contest and Chilly ChillyWeather Weather Jacolo Graduates From the theMaiden Maiden Ranks in Third Race NEWYORK N Y May 17 With a card of overnight races the best offering of the Westchester Racing Association at Belmont Park today was a mile and a furlong race for those of class C in the graded handi ¬ cap It brought a thrilling finish and a call for a photograph when J B Partridges Sun ¬ anair and Mrs Robert H Heighes Brown Twig crossed the line lapped and A H Watermans Count Stone just beat Deserter for third thirdWith With unseasonably cold weather and a drizzle of rain before the first race condi ¬ tions were anything but agreeable but an 6ther big crowd was out for the sevenrace card offered offeredIn In the handicap that was christened the Novelty nine started and with little delay at the post Arcaro had Bulwark first from the stalls with Sunanair right after him and terown Twig third Sunanair never possessed of early speed soon dropped back from the front division and later ran into some trouble when Sandy Boot moved up outside Of him himTtjooa Ttjooa Flavor was rushed through by Long den and as he drew alongside Bulwark Arcaro eased his mount back slightly and Brown Twig moved up while Sunanair having been taken to the outside was also moving up steadily and Rough Diamond was coming into the picture ROUGH DIAMOND ELIMINATED ELIMINATEDBulwark Bulwark took care of Good Flavor when the stretch was reached but there Brown Twig slipped through on the inside to chal ¬ lenge and Sunanair was gaining on the out flide Rough Diamond was eliminated when lie swerved badly a furlong from the finish Bulwark tired under a drive but Brown Twig was still going well when Sunanair finishing in the middle of the track caught him to win going away by half a length though a photograph was demanded by the fudges Count Stone which had raced last in the early stages came with a belated rush that landed him in third place but he was two lengths back of Brown Twig and just a head before Deserter DeserterA A disappointment of the race was Ann ORuley which had beaten Sunanair in a previous meeting She had no speed and finished last of the field fieldThe The opening race at one mile and a fur ¬ long for cheap ones saw Mrs Ethel D Jacobs Hymn lead from end to end to score easily over F T Blaisdells Wilco with Betty Sweitzers Even Up beating Bright Jhance for third Sarno had Hymn away quickly and she at once drew into a clear lead with Bright Chance and Languorous closely lapped while following her and High ¬ est Point not far back of these This order was maintained until the run for the long Stretch where Bright Chance tired and shortly thereafter Languorous dropped back while Wilco hung on well and Even Up began to improve his position In the run Home there was nothing to threaten the Jacobs filly and she was going away at the end and winner by three lengths lengthsj j TWO FOR M SARNO Apprentice M Sarno made his score two In a row when he piloted Maesun to victory fpr the Maemere Farm stable in a five fur ¬ longs dash for plater juveniles that was the second offering William F Hitts Suntime Was second and William Ziegler Jrs Papa ack third but the Ziegler colt was disqual ¬ ified for having seriously fouled Johnnie Dear in the running By the disqualifica ¬ tion Spanish Fly was moved into third place i The third was a six furlongs dash over the main course and for threeyearold fillies that had never won two races It brought a finish that called for a photograph when Louis Strubes Janeen and the Greentree Stables Allowance a sister to Twenty Grand crossed the line locked with J F Rogers Mayro beating That One for third thirdJacola Jacola a juvenile daughter of Jacojpo and La France which races for Mrs Edward friendly was an easy winner over the maid ¬ en fillies in the fourth race She was going away at the end after having won by five lengths and it was John Simonettis Mollie Swain which took second place handily from Myron Selznicks Fair Beam with Susi Q fourth Joseph E Wideners Quakeress was the favorite of this company but after reach ¬ ing a contending position she tired badly to fail utterly utterlyFAVORED FAVORED AT START STARTGeorge George D Wideners Rebellion with a big advantage at the start lasted for the six furlongs of the sixth race for the higher priced platers to win over Dewey Benthams Abner which was practically left at the post in a straggling start Thursday was third and the only other starters were Jesting and Epical EpicalRebellion Rebellion always a rapid breaker left his stall running and the others followed in a procession while Abner was a distant last lie Blanc made every use of his big advan ¬ tage at the break and steered Rebellion into a long early lead 1 Sarno drove Abner hard and he was mak ¬ ing up ground at every stride Rebellion Ituck it out to be winner by two lengths
