SINGERS FOLLY WINS BY NOSE NOSESlender Slender Margin Separates Freedman Horse From Up and Up Judges at Narragansett Use Magnifying MagnifyingGlass Glass on Photo Before Announcing AnnouncingWinner Winner of the Feature PAWTUCKET R I May 17 In a finish so close that it appeared to be a dead heat Singers Folly from the stable of Jake Freed ¬ man raced home a slender nose in front of Mrs E I Wades Up and Up in the Gaspee Purse which featured a cool and windy day of sport at Narragansett Park Two and a half lengths back of the battling leaders Mrs M C Breens Don Guzman was third He ruled the favorite Sachem finished fourth in the field of seven sevenThere There has been no morethrilling battle at the meeting that that which the leaders staged in the final sixteenth of a mile They went across the line on virtually even terms and the judges examined two pictures with a magnifying glass before posting Singers Follys number numberDon Don Guzman went to the front and set the pace to the stretch Up and Up was a good horse today the same sort of horse he proved to be in New England last season He was well placed the entire distance and got his nose in front of Don Guzman at the stretch The latter was shortening stride there and Singers Folly was sweeping up on the outside from last place as they straight ¬ ened out Don Guzman and Up and Up bat ¬ tled it out to the eighth post There Singers Folly caught and passed Don Guzman GuzmanAt At almost exactly the sixteenth post he caught Up and Up but the latter is as game as they come and held on doggedly They traveled the final sixteenth lapped and crossed the line the same way wayDON DON GUZMAN TIRES TIRESDon Don Guzman was quitting badly and only saved third by a neck over Sachem which was rated today instead of being rushed to the front frontBrendard Brendard was close up early but quit Nothing else was ever in the running The time was 145 145The The day was cool with a high wind sweep ing over the course The track was fast for the feature hut rain came up immediately after the race was run runRedoubtable Redoubtable Dixiana sent both Erin Torch and Miss Prudence to the post in the Falmoiith Handicap the supporting attrac ¬ tion The entry closed at 1 to 2 and Erin Torch made good as Bob Wholey rode him put to score by a neck over the suddenly improved Mixwell from the Mrs F Lang bartels stable Steven Panarellas Bubble some was third in a close finish taking the award just a nose back of the runnerup Good Omen which set the early pace tired and wound up in fourth fourthMiss Miss Prudence was sent out to kill off the early speedster Good Omen with her stable mate running third Miss Prudence accom ¬ plished her task by the time they reached the stretch She was tired by then but so was Good Omen and Erin Torch came along to take the lead holding it to the finish finishSURE SURE CLOUD EASILY EASILYMrs Mrs W H Canes Sure Cloud did not break in the air today Lyman Brusie hav ¬ ing schooled him at the gate and as a re ¬ sult he romped to the easiest sort of a front running victory in the four furlongs opener At the end he was three lengths clear of Araho Stables Araho Lass It was a tight finish for the third with Mrs S A Ket chells Francine C nosing out Sweep Brook The winner broke running and took the lead immediately He came into tKe stretch with a three lengths advantage and Lynch did not have to urge him in the final stages to maintain that margin Araho Lass was second all the way and was much the best of the others The time was 47 47A A hot choice was beaten by a neck in the second as Mrs M Eckmans High Torque failed to get up to whip High Mabel from Mrs V Wyses barn D Stelsingers Many Moons was third two lengths back of the runnerup and three in front of Uppercut Charwitch rumored a good thing broke fast and set the pace for threesixteenths where the winner collared him
