LATONIA FIELDS SMALL Substitute for Sixth Race Favorite Players Do Well Oaks Candidates Stage Stirring StirringContest Contest in Wyoming Purse With WithSquaw Squaw Lady Victorious LATONIA Ky June 3 Heavy black clouds hovered over the Latonia course this afternoon during the presentation of the sevenrace program The races had small fields and were staged over an offtrack resulting from the heavy rains of the pre ¬ vious night However a good brand of sport was furnished and the favorite play ¬ ers experienced their most successful day of the current meeting thus far One of the races originally scheduled in the overnight entries the sixth was declared off because of the changed condition of the track and another claiming contest was substituted to round out the abbreviated card cardThe The Wyoming Purse an allowance affair designed especially for threeyearold fillies and holding the fifth spot on the card served as the most attractive offering and brought out only five starters Two of the quintet are candidates for the Latonia Oaks closing stakes feature of the 1937 season seasonA A head finish enlivened the running of the Wyoming as Frank P Letellier of New Or ¬ leans won the purse when Squaw Lady was up in the last few strides to nip the King Ranchs Synonym in the six furlongs sprint The Rosedale Stables Exclaim landed third with Alice Highland and Wise Dart finish ¬ ing behind the first trio in the named order orderApprentice Apprentice Dee Packer who hails from the plains of Idaho had the mount on the stretchrunning bay daughter of Cherokee Catherine C made it two victories in a row having piloted Nawab down on the front Continued on thirtyeighth page LATONIA FIELDS SMALL Continued from first nageJ end in the previous event It required con ¬ siderable more skill and energy for Packer to land Squaw Lady in front than was needed for his first winner winnerAlice Alice Highland which scored in runaway fashion in her first start here hopped into the lead soon after the start and gave the impression that she would repeat as Squaw Lady trailed the field down the back stretch Alice Highland continued to set the pace until making the stretch turn where Synonym came through on the inside and was in front when they straightened out for the wire wireChoosing Choosing to come up on the outside to avoid interference Packer went to work on Squaw Lady with might and main and the cooperation received from the filly made it apparent that she would be a hard one to head at the finish line Gaining with every stride Squaw Lady caught Synonym in the last sixteenth and it was a battle from then on A few strides from the wire the Letel lier representative managed to poke her nose in front and in another stride in ¬ creased her margin to a good head it not being necessary to call on the camera to separate the first two to reach the finish finishAIR AIR POCKET IN FRONT FRONTOnly Only five competed for the purse in the opening race on the bill which was over six furlongs and favorite followers got away to a good start as C W Moores Air Pocket came down on the front end defeating Jane by two lengths with Lady Dedlock coming from far out of it to be third Novette set the pace for the first three furlongs but Air Pocket took command thereafter and was never in danger of being overhauled The winner ruled an evenmoney choice choiceMinster Minster proved an easy winner of the sec ¬ ond dash when a field of seven met at six furlongs The brown threeyearold which races for Miss R Finch crossed the finish line three lengths in advance of Ada W Thistle Red was third Like the first winner Minster ruled the public choice only in a more pronounced manner being oddson in the wagering wageringLEE LEE WEE SURPRISES SURPRISESThe The successful march of the favorites was stopped abruptly with the running of the third race which was accounted for by Lee Wee carrying the colors of S M Look and ridden by jockey Willie Hanka The bay filly easily defeated Marie Jean the choice by a length and a half while Robert S was third thirdAs As in the preceding races a small field matched strides over the six furlongs route and the winner was in the lead throughout Robert S gave the pacemaker a battle for a quarter of the journey but was unequal to the task of keeping up and Lee Wee opened up a comfortable lead Though Marie Jean gained on the leader from the top of the stretch to the finish mark Lee Wee was not in any immediate danger dangerThe The choices came back into their own in the fourth as Nawab triumphed over six others at a mile and seventy yards G Rauschs sixyearold gelding however was extended to the limit in order to show the way to Dev by a length and a half with Gustavia accounting for the third portion of the purse Taken under restraint for a half mile while Thornby showed the way Nawab was always within striking distance of the leader and easily took command when called on onThe The substitute race which was at a mile and seventy yards proved nothing more than a canter for W W Williamsons In ¬ flame Dorothy W finished second with Cherokee Red next in order The sort of footing that prevailed was just to the liking of the fouryearold black gelding and taken into the lead immediately he increased his advantage though under restraint in the final stages
