BRENDARD WINS DRIVING Inches Separate Cristate and Stocks for Second and Third Dixiana Racer Makes Amends in inFeature Feature for Stablemates Failure Failurein in Fifth at Detroit DETROIT Mich June 4 Chas T Tishers Detroitowned Dixiana stable made amends for its failure in the fifth race when Brendard was a driving winner of the Cen ¬ tury Post Handicap sixth event and main race of a sparkling program offered by the Detroit Racing Association at its Fair Grounds course this afternoon Mrs J Ches neys Cristate was second a half length back of the winner and the camera was called upon to separate him and the Willowbrook Farms Stocks which was a nose back of Cristate and a length before the tiring Couleedam First Entry thirteen to ten choice was last to complete the mile and aeventy yards which Brendard under an impost of 104 pounds ran in 144 144Poor Poor judgment on the part of J Malzan probably prevented Stocks from being the victor He took the son of Pillory back re ¬ peatedly for fiveeighths and after reaching the stretch the gelding finished under his own courage First Entry began the jour ¬ ney from outside the stalls and as the field raced in close quarters he was forced to lose ground throughout and gave way after threequarters threequartersWITHSTANDS WITHSTANDS CHALLENGE CHALLENGECharley Charley Stevenson had the winner in front in the first few strides and she romped along in the van of Couleedam which fol ¬ lowed in closest pursuit During the run for home Stevenson had the Dixiana star under strong handling and holding on in game fashion lasted when Cristate made his belated charge in the late stages stagesDespite Despite cloudy skies a big crowd was present for the attractive weekday program which honored the Century Post of the American Legion Disabled veterans nurses and doctors which saw overseas service were the guests of this post and their many friends were responsible for the increase in the attendance The former service men were treated to Interesting and formful racing and in addi ¬ tion to the feature which was named in honor of the post an allowance race labeled the Irish Hills brought forth a small field of seven at one mile and seventy yards as the supporting attraction This resulted in a thrilling finish when Jelly Roll carried the colors of Mrs A J Abel to a head suc ¬ cess over L C Youngs fastfinishing Eddie H Lady Sara and Lee Hastings coupled as the Dixiana entry and choice over the win ¬ ner were third and fourth respectively respectivelySaunderstown Saunderstown opened the program with a Continued on thirtyninth page BRENDARD WINS DRIVING Continued from first page popular score when he was an easy winner at the end of six furlongs Gay Bill was second and Blazing Torch third thirdCleverly Cleverly handled by Lee Hardy and under steadying restraint while Gay Bill and Legion Girl showed the way to the far bend Saunderstown moved into the lead when ready and drawing clear rapidly came to the finish well in hand to be two and a half lengths before Gay Bill which came again after losing ground on the stretch turn Blazing Torch whose unruly tactics caused him to begin from outside of the stalls raced wide throughout and although tiring in the last stages was much better than Kentucky Eagle which was well supported supportedBROPHY BROPHY SURPRISES SURPRISESRunning Running the six furlongs in 112 the fastest time of the meeting for the distance and benefitted by being in motion at the start Brophy furnished by Aldrich and Winans was a surprise winner of the second race for which Prince Heather sixth in the small field of seven was a lukewarm choice Miss Webb beginning slowest of all lasted to beat Smart Girl which saved ground throughout by a nose for second Hardy who was riding both ends of the Daily Double stole a step at the gate and this advantage probably was a big factor for Miss Webb was used up in reaching con ¬ tention and had little left when the winner began to tire in the last stages stagesDonna Donna Leona kept her record unblem ¬ ished when she was an easy winner of the third race for which a small field of five better grade juvenile platers were under colors Bottom Row was second and Oddesa Lad third Under G Gleaspn and forced to lose ground when improving her position the winner which flaunted the Aeolian Sta ¬ ble colors swept into the lead entering the stretch and drawing clear rapidly reached the finish two lengths before Bottom Row which beat Oddesa Lad by a half a length for second Sir George the second choice was done after threeeighths and Neil Jay came from far back and on the outside to garner fourth honors honorsKING KING BEE AGAIN AGAINKing King Bee made it two in a row when he turned back Stairs Dixie Fox and eight others in the six furlongs of the fourth race providing the third popular triumph and in striking distance while Just High and Dixie Fox dominated the pace The winner forged to the front inside the final quarter to reach the finish well in hand two lengths before Stairs which charged down on the outside to beat Dixie Fox by a length at the end endJust Just High quit badly after five furlongs and the 6thersof tnefield of eleven showed little
