Brooklynand and Vamoose for First Time This Year NEW YORK N Y June 4 Seven threeyearolds were named overnight for the Belmont Stakes to be run at Belmont Park tomorrow The field includes with only one or two exceptions the best horses of that age in the country today War Admiral is the favorite His arch rival Pompoon is second choice The other five are regarded as having only an outside chance to beat the two leaders of their di ¬ vision The public expects War Admiral and Pompoon to fight it out for the purse with third place the bone of contention among the others However Brooklyn which has yet to oppose either War Admiral or Pompoon this year has worked in brilliant fashion for the race and may possibly make it a threehorse race instead of the twohorse race as it is now considered by threeyearolds will be assembled among the seven starters in the sixty ninth renewal of the Belmont Stakes tomorrow afternoon and what may prove to be a record crowd at spacious Belmont Park is expected to view War Admiral in the effort to add to his brilliant record which included victories in the Preakness Kentucky Derby and Chesapeake Stakes The Belmont is not the richest of the countrys threeyearold fixtures having a gross value of 50050 with 37550 net for the winner but it is steeped in tradition dating back to 1867 as well as possessing the unique feature of being the only American counterpart of the English Derby in having a closing at weanling time and being decided over the testing route of a mile and onehalf War Admiral is heading a field which in most mostrespects respects is familiar but his six opponents include two colts which did not feel the heat of his brilliant speed in the Derby and the Preakness They are Brooklyn and Va ¬ moose two sons of Blue Larkspur which won the Belmont in 1929 As was proved the case in the Derby and Preakness the principal foe of Samuel D Riddles colt is expected to be Pompoon and Jerome Louch heims colorbearer undoubtedly will be Pompoon The John Hay Whitney colt gave a brilliant per ¬ formance in winning the Withers over the mile distance a week after he was beaten eight lengths in the Preakness while Max ¬ well Howards hope has not raced since the Derby although he has been training steadily steadilyBROOKLYN BROOKLYN DT FORM FORMBrooklyn Brooklyn which was held out of the Derby by E R Bradley when he failed to withstand the preparation has been pointed for the Belmont in a more gradual but nevertheless steady manner He was asked for the fastest workout over the Belmont distance of any of the candidates going over the long route Tuesday in 231 231Melodist Melodist the Wheatley Stable candidate is the only member of the field which has not been given a workout over the Belmont distance but he appeared in a mile and a furlong race last Monday and since has gone a similar distance in 155 155War War Admiral was tried over the Belmont route three times by trainer George Con way the last being in 234 breezing Pom poons last effort was nine furlongs in 155 after he had gone the mile and onehalf in 235 several days previously Since going the Belmont distance in 235 Flying Scot has been nine furlongs in 153 and the mile and a quarter in 211 Vamooses time for the route was 235 while Sceneshifter con ¬ cluded his heavy training for the race by going around the Belmont course in 233 233DISPLAYS DISPLAYS FINE the colt in all of his engagements this season He will arrive from Chicago Saturday morning Kurtsinger is seeking his second Belmont victory as he previously had won on Twenty Grand in 1931 1931James
