Threats Until the Cup races in the late summer and fall War Admiral has his final oppor ¬ tunity of the season this afternoon in the Belmont Stakes to race at level weights with his opponents Because his six oppo ¬ nents in Americas only event comparable to the English Derby must carry 126 pounds as he will himself the mighty atom from Glen Riddle Farm will be the solid favorite as he has been every minute since his vic ¬ tory in the Preakness no matter how closely it may have been attained over Pompoon Jerome Louchheims colt is back again to wage another battle with War Admiral as he did in both the Kentucky Derby and the Pimlico classic and those who believe he had excuses in the Preakness will be taking jthe odds on him this afternoon Even though iWar Admiral and Pompoon dominate the field according to the records a keen and thrilling race is expected even to the extent that the Man o War colt once again may take the track at flag fall and dominate the Issue all the way wayWar War Admirals bold way of racing going to the front immediately turning back re ¬ peated challenges and throwing in a sharp quarter of a mile in the late stages has plumbed the depths of the publics excuses insofar as condition is concerned Apparently an easy horse to train he has been over the Belmont distance of a mile and onehalf three times but always under careful rating He went easier in his final trial than in his two previous efforts War Admiral certainly wont be short in his try on the final leg of Americas triple crown and there is not any question at the mo ¬ ment that he wont go the distance Harry Richards rides Pompoon again in the Belmont which may not be without its significance He had the mount on the son of Pompey and Oonagh by Friar Rock in the Wood Memorial and Kentucky Derby as well as in the Futurity last fall but he was not available in the Preakness because of being compelled to handle Matey for his contract employer Richards knows Pom ¬ poon as no other jockey could be expected He said he would not have gone up on the inside of War Admiral in the Preakness which means Richards would have avoided the deeper going on the inside What dif ¬ ference this would have made in the out ¬ come of the Preakness is problematical as the saving of ground on the final turn brought Pompoon to War Admiral with a rush but on the other hand the Man o War colt was going easily while doing his running well out from the rail In the Bel ¬ mont however railhugging will be the or ¬ der rather than the exception exceptionBecause Because of his fine efforts in both they may cause trouble troubleFlying Flying Scot has the best record of the others in the Belmont field His last per ¬ formance resulted in a clean cut victory in the Withers after he had run third in the Preakness but he was eight lengths back of the winner in that race and not gaining any Scencshifter and Brooklyn both are what may be termed question mark horses The former scored a dazzling victory at Hialeah Park on the last day of the meeting over the mile and one furlong course but in the Kentucky Derby he lacked racing room at intervals and advanced from eleventh to fifth place in the final quarter mile He should have all the room he requires to race as he pleases Brooklyn has not run since April but has had a slow careful prep for todays engagement Whether it has been too careful remains to be seen but trainer H J Thompson put him on the fence Tuesday to give him much desired condi ¬ tioning Make no mistake that the son of Blue Larkspur is not a good colt and if he doesnt prove troublesome today he may later on Melodist has disappointed on sev ¬ eral occasions since his surprising victory in the Wood Memorial Stakes something a topnotch Belmont candidate should not have done Vamoose only recently gradu ¬ ated from the maiden ranks and when the Falaise Stable colt performed creditably in a workout over the Belmont distance it was decided to run him His connections are confident the best has yet to be drawn from the smartlybred son of Blue Larkspur and Eastern Lady by Spearmint
