" THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 REDBREAST Bay colt, by Chicle Robins Egg; owned by Green-tree Stable. Trained by W. Brennan. By NORRIS KOYDEN Mrs. Payne Whitneys racing fortunes havent been so pleasing since the days of Twenty Grand, but the popular owner of the Greentree Stable may see her silks once again in the forefront in three-year-old racing this season through the accomplishments of Redbreast. This son of Chicle and Robins Egg, by Wildair, gives promise of developing into a good three-year-old, and if such takes place he is certain to be immensely popular due to the graciousness of his owner. Redbreast just failed to break into the group of top two-year-olds shown last season, but he showed enough and is bred along the proper lines to make him a fine prospect for the campaign to come. In addition he is a fine-looking colt of ample size which was not excessively campaigned, having started only seven times. The lone victory of Redbreast was scored in the Babylon Handicap, at Aqueduct, in which he ran six furlongs in 1:12 under 111 pounds, to defeat Mountain Ridge by a. length, as Chaps was third and .Cant Wait fourth. He closed with a rush through the long stretch to win going away. In his three previous starts, Redbreast was unplaced in a pair of maiden races, although finishing close up, and second in the Ladies Handicap. All three of. these contests were at Saratoga. The Greentree colt was fifth in his first effort, finishing about five lengths back of Spring Melody, and then fourth in his next outing, although less than a length separated him from the victorious Bull Whip, with Nedayr second and Sturdy Duke third. He closed willingly as he did in the Ladies Handicap, in which he was beaten a couple of lengths by Airegla, while defeating Great Union and Pernie. After accounting for the Babylon, Redbreast went after the Junior Champion, but he wasnt so successful in this dash of six and one-half furlongs, although coming through with a very creditable performance. As Cant Wait uncovered unusual speed in the stretch to score by six lengths, Redbreast barely lost the place to Fighting Fox. In preparation for the Belmont Futurity, the Greentree colorbearer was tested over the six-furlong course at the big Nassau plant, but could do no better than finish fifth, r although he was beaten only two and a half lengths by Dauber, while Bourbon King was third and Specify fourth. He gave six pounds to Dauber, which ran the distance In 1:10. Redbreast completed his juvenile racing in the Futurity, in which he was unable to maintain a position in the first division, and finished well back. He may have had an excuse, but if such is the case it never has been brought out. Everything in his record considered, it is doubtful that Redbreast reached the peak of his development, and if he can and does improve, he may go far during the coming season, According to his breeding, Redbreast is liable to be a top colt, being by the veteran, Chicle, sire of many good horses, and out of RobinsEgg, a daughter of Wildair and Oval, which possesses the Fair Play Rock Sand cross so prominently identified with Man o War and many other stars. Oval also produced the capable Goose Egg, which was by Chicle. f Musket Toxophjlite est A, trahan marc rCarbine - - "S Ulerscy .; Knowsley J Clemence j Lord Lyon r g -Minting L and LMaid of the Mint J Mint Sauce ."V L Warble 5 Skylark a Coturnix f Hanover.... j Hindoo r-j u Bourbon Belle r Hamburg -I j I Lady Reel Fellowcraft g J Mannie Gray and K f St. Simon Galopin 03 fo -Lady Frivoles J St. Angela -a 3 J3 LDuchess j Rosicrucian W Bonnie Katie B 1 f Ben Brush S Bramble Q , .
