SURE OFF IN A HOT FINISH Accounts for Wednesdays Excellent Offering at Empire City Track Wins Nichavo Purse by Margin of Nose Over OverMichigan Michigan Flyer With Selmalad SelmaladFinishing Finishing Third NEW YORK N Y Oct 26 Sure Off the juvenile son of Swift and Sure Time Off that races for Warren Wrights Calumet Farm stable in a battling finish dropped his nose down before Joe W Browns Michigan Flyer and Paragon Stables Selmalad to win the best offering at the Empire City Associa ¬ tion course today todayThis This was the Nichavo Purse a dash of five and threequarters furlongs that brought out a rather nice band of second division twoyearolds twoyearoldsThe The result was only one of the surprises of the day for Sure Off coupled with Vain Bo was a long shot while Mrs Vera S Braggs Brceks was the choice of the com ¬ pany panyThe The midweek sport offered was excellent and a big crowd was out The track was in good condition but again the favorites were anything but dependable dependableIn In the juvenile dash that went to Sure Off it is probable the favorite Breeks was only beaten because of running out when going to the stretch turn Leaving his stall in motion the son of Epithet cut out the pace and was under slight restraint as he went along clear of the field Selmalad was racing in second place with Paddy down on the rail and running third thirdAPPEARS APPEARS BEATEN BEATENThese These were soon four lengths before the others and Sure Off was so far back of the contention that he seemed to have scant chance Then midway of the turn from the stretch it was all changed Breeks though apparently going easily began to bear out and Renick was unable to straighten him out This afforded Selmalad his opportunity and saving ground he showed in front by daylight Michigan Flyer had moved into second place and Sure Off was racing on the outside of the pair pairIn In the final furlong Michigan Flyer gradu ¬ ally wore down Selmalad but at the same time Dabson brought Sure Off along on the outside and he was right with the son of Michigan Boy There was just a little bump ¬ ing as ho came alongside but it had no effect on either colt and in a hard drive Dabson landed Sure Off winner by a nose Michigan Flyer was only a head before the tiring Selmalad and American Daisy had closed considerable ground to be fourth fourthThe The Arcturjis Handicap mile and a furlong j brought another surprise when Count Arthur ran kindly and as a result carried the silks of Mrs John Hertz to victory over J D I Norris Sandy Boot favorite of the field Far back of the pair Mrs B F Whitakers I Sickle T outgamcd First Bid for fourth I IIt It has only been the uncertain temper of i Count Arthur that has prevented his win I ning many a race and he was in a cheer 1 ful mood for this handicap Breaking well I I the son of Rcigh Count raced closer to the pace than has been usual and then when challenged by Sandy Boot in a stretch drive he stuck it out gamely to be winner by a head headEPICAL EPICAL BEST BESTMrs Mrs Ethel D Jacobs Epical beat a cheap lot in the opening five and threequarters furlongs dash He led home Cobe from the Benjamin Deutch stable and Dewey Ben Ihams Bill D saved third from R V Boyles Riccadonna Riccadonna was responsible for a considerable delay at the start and the field was not sent away until she was banished to a position outside the stalls Going to the stretch turn Masked Plane again came into contention but she did not last long as Bill D carried her along It was not until a furlong from the finish that both Epical and Cobe came into the run ¬ ning Cobe was running gamely on his own courage but Bierman roused Epical to have him drawing away and be the winner by a length and a half Cobe saved the place by a like distance from the tired Bill D Cobe went to the post a wellplayed favorite at 9 to 5 i
