Here and There Thereon on the Turf j i i iWar War Admiral Quick to Arrive Seabiscuit Required Seasoning Riddle Colt for Sale Early Match Is Boxer vs Slugger The records of Seabiscuit and War Ad ¬ miral tell opposite stories and because they do so makes their forthcoming clash all the more interesting War Admiral it might be said was a colt which came quickly to hand although he didnt really reach his best form until he became a threeyearold He won his first two outings the first at Havre dc Grace at five and onehalf furlongs and the second at Belmont Park at five furlongs straightaway In his third effort the Na ¬ tional Stallion Stakes at five furlongs he had to be content with third place behind Pompoon and Fencing Then came his ef ¬ fort in the Great American Stakes at Aque ¬ duct in which be wassecond to Fairy Hill as Maedic was third the distance being six fur ¬ longs Becoming ill after that effort the son of Man o War and Brushup did not start again for two and a half months or in the Eastern Shore Handicap HandicapIn In this dash of six furlongs at Havre de Grace War Admiral led all the way and ran the six furlongs in 111 to easily defeat Orientalist Rex Flag and numerous others but he didnt have so much good fortune in his next outing the Richard Johnson Stakes for which the track was muddy Bottle Cap found the going more to his lik ¬ ing and defeated Samuel D Riddles good colt and so he was put away for the re ¬ mainder of the season Perhaps sagacious George Conway his trainer thought War Admiral hadnt entirely overcome the rav ¬ ages of his illness At any rate the colt came out as a threeyearold to march through the threeyearold ranks in order even though he suffered a severe cut in win ¬ ning the Belmont Stakes which kept him out of competition until the Laurel meeting in October He defeated Pompoon three times and all the other championship as ¬ pirants in the Kentucky Derby Preakness and Belmont Stakes before cleaning up again in his autumn campaign campaignWhile While War Admiral proved successful as a Continued on twentyfifth page I HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page twoyearold Seabiscuit was just another colt of a quality in between that of a stake horse and a plater He began running at Hialcah Park in January and kept right on going until November 11 in the Walden Handicap at Pimilco his best victory being the Ardsley Handicap at Empire City a race recently won by Xalapa Clown As a three yearold the son of Hard Tack and Swing On was started out in high class company by running second to Tintagel but he was not considered a first class threeyearold and was sent against second class company in New England with just soso success Then in August Of 1936 came his sale to Charles S Howard for 8000 a price that was just about half as much as would have been ac ¬ cepted for War Admiral at the time timeUnder Under the Howard banner Seabiscuit con ¬ tinued heavy duty for more than two months after which he went to California and there began his rise to the upper division He won a pair of stakes at Bay Meadows to com ¬ plete his threeyearold season but he was close to his fouryearold campaign at Santa Anita in which he finished second to Rose mont in the Santa Anita Handicap and later captured the San Juan Capistrano Handicap so easily that he finished seven lengths ahead War Admiral therefore far outranked Seabiscuit as a threeyearold the former taking the outstanding events and the Howard colt striving for events of modest value until he came out as such a formidable candidate for the 100000 Santa Anita Handicap after having shown so much in the San Antonio despite much bad luck From that time on Seabiscuit left no doubt that he had come into his own and should be reck ¬ oned countryWhile among the best horses In the country While War Admiral swept everything be ¬ fore him as a threeyearold Seabiscuit en ¬ joyed his best season as a fouryearold go ¬ ing unbeaten after the Santa Anita until striking a muddy track in the Narragansett Handicap in which he was beaten by Calu ¬ met Dick and Snark Later he had to be content with a deadhcat with Heelfly in the Laurel and was nosed out by Esposa in the Bowie This year he was narrowly beaten by Aneroid in the San Antonio and Stage ¬ hand in the Santa Anita and later dropped close decisions in the Stars and Stripes and Manhattan handicaps and Laurel Stakes while War Admiral knocked off the Widener Challenge Cup Queens County Handicap a quartet of events at Saratoga and the Jockey Club Gold Cup suffering a lone defeat In the Massachusetts Handicap for which the track was drying out and tough The records show that Seabiscuit ran often and everywhere while War Admiral was so carefully handled that he goes Into Tuesdays race with only three defeats against his record For want of a better way to express it their match may be considered a clash between slugger and boxer
