named for his nearby farm was won in its entirety by Alfred Gwynne Van derbilt at Pimlico this afternoon after his colorbearer Pit Bull deadheated with Legal Light in the six furlongs event last fall Outdone represented the enterprising young sportsman in todays renewal and under a hustling ride from the rejuvenated Silvio Coucci defeated the Shandon Farms Mor step by a length as the Milky Way Farms Up the Creek was another half length away and a head before Marriage Outdone a daughter of Pompey and Sweep Out gave Vanderbilt his first stakes triumph in a long time and added 2995 to his treasury An outsider in the wagering of the eight juveniles composing the field of which the Milky Way entry of Up The Creek and No Competition ruled oddson Outdone carried 111 pounds and covered the distance in 112 The failure of the favorites was one of several to jolt the talent during the afternoon Up The Creek might have been best as he dwelt at the start and Charles Stevenson repeatedly had to take him back when unable to find room on the inside but the colt finished strongly when clear through the stretch No Competition likewise was off slowly and he lacked speed while racing on the outside COUCCI HUSTLES HUSTLESCoucci Coucci hustled Outdone into a slight early lead over Marriage and raced the latter into defeat in the opening four furlongs to draw out slightly towards the end as Morstep weakened after challenging at the furlong pole She had improved her position grad ually up to that stage Nick Wall gave further evidence of his extensive ability in piloting A C Comptpns Clingendaal to a neck victory in the Arling ¬ ton Handicap the secondary feature in which he was favored over ten other Grade C horses An easy winner here on opening day in fast time the fouryearold gelded son of Pharamond II Bossie was given much sterner opposition in the Arlington but he survived it to score by a neck over D A Woods Infidox which beat out W L Branns Journey On by a head Sir Jim James was a like margin farther back backHard Hard ridden from his outside post position Clingendaal got to the front of the mile and onesixteenth event upon reaching the back stretch After opening a clear lead he was carefully rated and then in the stretch re ¬ sponded gamely to Walls stout urging to stave off the challenges of Infidox Journey On and Tempestuous TempestuousInfidox Infidox was always close up as Tempestu ¬ ous forced the pace for threequarters but Eccard took him to the rail at the halfmile ground and then to the outside entering the stretch either of which moves might have been an error He finished steadily as did Journey On and Sir Jim James both of which were under strong punishment during the final half mile to improve their positions on the outside The time was 145 145GOOD GOOD COMBINATION COMBINATIONMayro Mayro and Nick Wall proved a better com ¬ bination than In Memory and Dupps in the opening event at a mile and one furlong and the J F Rogers filly took the verdict by a length Millsdale Stables Yarn Sox was another three lengths away and a head before Anhelation among the dozen lowly platers platersWall Wall placed Mayro in command going to the first turn and rated him perfectly in that position to the stretch where the daugh ¬ ter of Dark Hero was able to outgamc In Memory after she had been unable to get through on the inside leaving the back stretch and had to go wide coming into the home straightaway Yarn Sox came from well back as did Anhelation AnhelationAnother Another upset occurred in Jhe decision of the second race a dash of six furlongs for twoyearolds of Maryland parentage when War Streak from the J Kelly barn raced in his kindest fashion following his last three dull efforts to score in a drive His victory the first since midsummer took place at the direct expense of Zenana which ruled a topheavy choice and they were sepa ¬ rated by a length and onehalf as Lickety split took a close verdict for third over Cody Twelve youngsters were under colors anc the early running saw Licketysplit leading the field and holding sway by a long margii in the first part of the journey He came into the home stretch still in advance of his company but War Streak readily overhaulee the Mrs J Fisher Jr filly in the last fur ¬ long and managed to withstand the favorite which came from seventh place The win ¬ ner was ridden by A Robertson and paid better than 10 to 1 1Leading Leading for the two miles of Cockeysville Steeplechase that brought five timbertop ¬ pers into action for the race that was the third event on the card Rocky Run scored the first Maryland victory for the Mrs J H Whitney stable when he defeated the favo ¬ rite Prattler by the smallest possible mar ¬ gin Only four starters completed the long grind Argonaut being third in the running after going badly lame and Luckite had no opposition when High Mart fell at the fourth jump In the running Rocky Run under the clever handling of jockey G Walker was gifted with enough speed to go into the van position with the start and after fenc ¬ ing without a mishap over the fifteen ob stacles stuck to his task willingly to beat Prattler by a nose after they raced on even terms from the last fence to the finish
