ROMAN WINS HYDE PARK STAKES FOR J E WIDENER Sir Gallahad HI Colt Finishes Length Before Courageous Marogay Eighteen Thousand Journey to Arlington Park for Sat ¬ urdays Sport Annie Alone Accounts for Fifth Race in Nash Brothers Silks ARLINGTON HEIGHTS III July 8 With allowances for his two month layoff from competition Joseph E Wideners Roman turned in a splendid performance to win the eleventh running of the Hyde Park Stakes j before approximately 18000 persons at Arlington Park this afternoon The bay son of Sir Gallahad III and Buckup winner also of the Lafayette Stakes at Keeneland and the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs was scoring his fifth triumph in seven starts and at the same time was establishing himself as one of the favorites for the Arlington Futurity and the years juvenile championship R A Firestones Marogay which earned a decision over Roman in Florida last March was a length behind the Widener colt in finishing second while C Andrade IIIs Liberty Ken was third another length and a half back E W Duffys Dollarville led ledhome home the others in the field of eight The race was decided at five and a half furlongs furlongsROMAN ROMAN TAKES LEAD LEADRoman Roman whose last previous engagement was the Bashford Manor did not break in front but he was not long getting there Until they reached the turn Marogay was lapped on the Widener juvenile but then Roman gained on his chief rival and swung into the stretch with an advantage of three lengths He still was this far in front a furlong out but then Roman began to give ground before the steadygoing Marogay MarogayIn In finishing third Liberty Kerr made up ground in the last quarter as did Dollarville Domkin raced in third position to the stretch and then gave way wayThe The other at odds of almost 5 to 1 1E E K Murrays Jim Corn which probably could have whipped a similar field a few days ago when the odds against him were 27 to 1 scored in easy fashion in the seven j furlongs second event for which he had con I fident backing Jockey Charles Rollins had I him far out in the track the other day but he made no mistakes with the Murray horse today and as a result he won in onesided fashion three lengths separating him from the runnerup and favorite Jadva Queenie was third Jim Corn was never far away while Silver Braid and Pay Check were bat ¬ tling each other for pacemaking honors and upon reaching the final straightaway he dis ¬ posed of the leaders easily to achieve his emphatic victory Jadva might have been close to the winner at the end but she was forced back by Jim Corn approaching the far turn at the loss of at least several lengths lengthsPOPULAR POPULAR WINNER WINNERThe The third race a sprint of five and a half furlongs for twoyearolds saw the Lex brook Stables Potranco lead from soon after the start and score a popular victory under Warren Yarberry The son of Judge Hay now has four victories in six starts to his credit and the score would have been five triumphs except that he was disqualified after finishing in front on one occasion Brother Higher raced with the Lexbrook juvenile for about half the distance and then Potranco drew into the clear and remained there scoring with a length and a half to spare Brother Higher tired in the drive Miilshow and Valdina Babe moving past him respectivelyThe to be second and third respectively The eightyearold Polycletus was staunch ¬ ly supported in his effort to score his third straight triumph and his tenth of the year but after leading to the last sixteenth gave way badly and dropped out of the picture Victory went to C W Pershalls Royal Blue whose triumph enabled jockey Yarberry to ride his second winner of the day The Pershall gelding moved up between horses in the drive and emerged with a head de ¬ cision as Goshen took the place a nose be ¬ fore Little Drift The latter which came to the extreme outside for the drive got to the front inside the final sixteenth but she
