PRINCE ARGO BY LENGTH Out in Front All the Way in Liberty Handicap at Detroit Jockey J Glaug Astride Noble Boy Loses Stirrup Iron in Running Autograph Conies Bight Back DETROIT Mich July S Prince Argo fouryearold son of Happy Argo and one of the most consistent sprinters in midWestern racing won the sixth running of the Liberty Handicap feature event at Detroit this after noon and thereby chalked up the first vic ¬ tory of the current meeting for the account of Norman Butsey Hernandez After his two cleancut victories Bomar Stables Noble Boy was installed favorite over the Hernan ¬ dez entry which also included Roidef but Johnny Glaug lost a stirrup iron and he led only the erratic Traffic Light at the end of sixfurlongs William Zakoors Idle Elf was second and Bert Carpenters Candescent third thirdPrince Prince Argo carried 106 pounds was han ¬ dled by Porter Roberts the leading stake winning rider of the meeting and running the distance in 112 earned 2030 of the 2500 added prize for his owner ownerRoberts Roberts had the winner in front at the start and he sprinted into a threelength lead during the opening quarter with Roidef in closest pursuit He held that advantage to the stretch where after increasing it to four lengths Prince Argo began to tire rapidly and Roberts had him under strong urging when he came to the finish a length before Idle Elf Four lengths back and the same margin before Time Please was Candescent with Roidef in fifth position positionEARLY EARLY MORNING STORM STORMAlthough Although a severe wind and electrical storm did much damage to Detroit early this morning it brought welcome relief from the torrid weather that has prevailed for nearly a week and this no doubt was the cause of a big crowd being present for the attractive program Rain which accom ¬ panied the storm put the track in a bad condition for the training period but the course shed the moisture rapidly and was in a good condition for the opening of the program programHard Hard work on the part of the track crew whipped the racing strip into its best shape for the running of the Ypsilanti Purse and secondary contest and when J L Mac Knights Autograph ran the one mile and seventy yards in 143 she came within one second of the track mark It was the second straight victory for the daughter of Insco and she captured a double for the Mac Knight Stable for Morris R was successful under these silks in the opening event OBantam was second and Distract a recent arrival from Cleveland third Continued on thirtyeighth page PRINCE ARGO BY LENGTH Continued from first page Ridden by Arnold Sorsen who also was astride Morris R Autograph sprinted into a clear lead during the opening fivesix ¬ teenths and she held a clear lead until near ing the final halfmile where she rapidly increased her advantage to four lengths and the finish found her well in hand and with six lengths to spare spareAutograph Autograph eked out a narrow triumph over Straight Thru the favorite last Saturday but today the latter lacked his speed and after racing far back throughout only led Show Up to the finish finishOpening Opening the program was a marathon journey over one mile and five furlongs and the venerable Morris R furnished a mild surprise by galloping along in the van of the field from flagfall to the finish Pedant got up to beat White Bread by a nose for second but she was about five lengths back of the winner The fans in stalled Imperial High with Dupuy aboard as the favorite but the sixyearold daughter I of Brown Bud dropped out of contention during the opening fiveeighths and al ¬ though she made up some ground faijed I to menace the leaders but garnered fourth honors White Bread and Pedant followed in closest pursuit of Morris R which did not wear down White Bread until reaching the final stride strideANOTHER ANOTHER FOR LITTLE DUPE DUPELittle Little Dupe resumed his winning ways in the second race on Exchange Club which led from start to finish Two and onehalf lengths back was Scudder the favorite in second place and Imperial Betsy came from far back to finish third She pulled up lame after the finish finishAnother Another favorite disappointed when Glad Francis a 17to10 choice was the trailer in the field of seven in the threequarters third race Leading honors went to Phil T Chinns Ocean Tide which was showing improve ¬ ment under a change of riders Oak Park was second and Imperial Ronie third
