REDLIN NEW YORK SURPRISE Scores Convincing Triumph in the Millwood Handicap at Empire Bill Farnsworth Disappointing Choice Among AmongGrade Grade C Competitors Ronnie RonnieNash Nash Saddle Star YONKERS N Y July 10 RedlSn up from Delaware Park where she raced last on June 19 scoring a fivelength victory in sloppy going set the public back when she sped to a convincing triumph in the Mill ¬ wood Handicap fifth and headline offering today at Empire City In winning the threeyearold chestnut daughter of Dunlin and Ready which raced under W H Lips combs silks carried Ronnie Nash to his second score of the day The youngsters first victoiy came in the third contest astride Martin Van Beurens Ouch OuchA A crowd of about 8000 was on hand for the beginning of the second week of the Empire City Racing Associations twenty fourday meeting The intense heat forced most of the male spectators to shed their coats and there was a sigh of relief late in the program when the sun disappeared be ¬ hind clouds which promised relief in the way of a thunder shower Up to the time the races ended however the shower had failed to materialize materializeIn In the Millwood a class C affair for forthreeyearolds threeyearolds and upward most of the speculators went to Mrs S C Winfreys fast fastiand iand courageous old Bill Farnsworth send sendi i ing him postward choice at 9 to 5 The Thesecond second choice was Van Beurens Pixey Dell at 16 to 5 Billionaire from the Edward R RBradley Bradley barn and K A Veits Sun Inplay Inplaywere were cothird choices at 5 to 1 while the thewinner winner was next in line at 6 to 1 1PERFECT PERFECT START STARTThe The field of eight was at the post only a minute and a half before George Cassidy sent them away to a perfect start Nash lost no time barging to the top with Redlin and the filly had more than enough speed to carry her into a threelength lead in the first quarter Pixey Dell outfooted the others away from the stalls and lay in sec ¬ ond place with Bill Farnsworth third On the last named Don Meade took his time obviously figuring the leader would come to i him somewhere inside the eighth post j On the turn Pixey Dell under Jimmy Stout and Bill Farnsworth started charging t after Redlin By the time the leader reached the head of the home lane her margin over i her nearest pursuers had been reduced to i two lengths At that point Pixey Dell was only a head before Bill Farnsworth which Iwas at last in full stride and eating up ground groundMeade Meade worked on the favorite with the whip and old Bill made a desperate effort to overhaul the pacemaker While his efforts enabled him to close in a trifle on her he was able to make up only a halflength in the final furlong That still left Redlin a one and onehalf length margin of victory Her time was 22 46 108 108Bill Bill Farnsworth enjoyed a twolength edge for second money over the tiring Pixey Dell She in turn was a halfdozen lengths before Sun Inplay the fourth horse to finish i Birthday from the Greentree Stable flashed 1 good speed at the end finished fifth and j worked out an additional eighth of a mile
