WELDING TURNS BACK ADA W IN DETROIT OPENING EVENT EVENTWilliamson Williamson Filly Makes Good in First Outing of Season SeasonDETROIT DETROIT Mich June 19 The silks of F H 7illiamson were carried to a three quarter length victory by Welding in the first race at the Detroit Fair Grounds today Well ridden by N L Pierson the daughter of Haste and Sickle Feather came to the close of the six furlongs under a drive to down the favored Ada W from the H M Walker stable Third honors fell to Mrs E Clouds Peggy Byrd which disposed of the eight other fillies and mares which met metJota Jota had the highest speed away from the stalls and in the trip down the back stretch held a halflength lead over Peggy Byrd which was a head on Codoll Jota continued to set a stiff pace around the upper turn and increased her margin to a length and one half over Peggy Byrd approaching the stretch Codoll held on stubbornly in third place while Ada W moved up to offer a bid and raced fourth Pierson had Welding in fifth position at this stage and was rating his mount along steadily on the inside insideWELDING WELDING RESPONDS WELL WELLTurning Turning for home Welding moved out a bit and Pierson went to work on the filly with the result that she took a head advan ¬ tage over Peggy Byrd and the latter was the same margin in advance of Ada W Codoll and Jota both gave way beaten and dropped out of it Welding then came de ¬ terminedly when called upon for the final drive and after disposing of Peggy Byrd held Ada W safe Running time oyer the fast track was 113 and Welding rewarded her supporters with a 1660 straight mutuel payoff payoffPartly Partly cloudy weather prevailed for the eightrace program at the local track today The sun broke through occasionally during tLe afternoon and evening and a light breeze added to the comfort of the largesized crowd which turned out to view the sport The racing strip which had been off dur ¬ ing the first three days this week was rated fast for the earlier events Wagering was brisk during the matinee especially on the better events and mutuel department heads expressed satisfaction with the days business
