GOVERNORS DAY TO BE HELD AT DELAWARE PARK JUNE 26 26Invitations Invitations Extended to Chief Executives of Four States StatesSTANTON STANTON Del June 19 Following the custom established last year Delaware Park again will have Governors Day on the occa ¬ sion of the running of the 6500 added Diamond State Stakes This mile and a fur ¬ long event is set for Thursday June 26 The Hon Walter W Bacon governor of Dela ¬ ware has been invited and if present he will present the trophy to the winning owner Last year the then governor of Delaware Richard C McMullen made this presenta ¬ tion The governors of the neighboring states of Maryland Pennsylvania and New Jersey also have been invited Following is the letter of president J Simpson Dean of the Delaware Steeplechase and Race Asso ¬ ciation to the governor governorHon Hon Walter W Bacon Governor of Delaware DelawareMy My Dear Governor Bacon BaconThe The Delaware Steeplechase and Race Association is fortunate in being able to serve turf devotees from four areas Dela ¬ ware Maryland Pennsylvania and New Jer ¬ sey Most of our patrons come from the populous centers of Wilmington Baltimore and Philadelphia and quite a few come f rojn across the river in New Jersey Therefore it was decided last year to establish Gov ¬ ernors Day an occasion when the chief exec ¬ utives of the lour states are guests of the executive committee of the Delaware Steeple ¬ chase and Race Association AssociationAs As a member of this committee and as president of Delaware Park I have the honor to invite you and Mrs Bacon to participate in the Governors Day program on June 26 The other members of the committee are Donald P Ross and William duPont Jr JrOn On Governors Day the Diamond State Stakes one of our most important features will be run this test being designed by its conditions to improve the breed as well as to afford a sporting spectacle spectacleMr Mr Ross has donated for the Diamond State Stakes a perpetual trophy which was raced for and won by the twelfth Lord Loveat of Beaufortcastle IvernessShire It was made in London in 1826 by the famous silver ¬ smith Benjamin Smith and was handed down in the family until its disposal by sale with other Loveat silver silverWe We shall be doubly honored if you will consent to present the trophy to the owner of the winning horse on Governors Day He will retain possession of it until the running of the Diamond State Stakes on Governors Day next year To this winning owner Mr Ross presents for his permanent possession a replica of the cup cupFaithfully Faithfully yours yoursJ J SIMPSON DEAN President PresidentJ J Simpson Dean president of the Dela ¬ ware Steeplechase and Race Association re ¬ ceived word from the Hon Walter W Bacon governor of Delaware that he would be here for the Governors Day program on Thurs ¬ day June 26 and would present the cup to the owner of the winner of the Diamond State Stakes The Hon Charles Edison governor of New Jersey sent his regrets stating that due to the legislature being in session he would be unable to attend
