Arlington Park opens on Monday one of the colorful owners with horses there will be Senor Horatio Luro the scholarly Chilean whose racing colors have been used by his family for over 300 years It was Luro who im ¬ ported Amor Brujo to this country and also sold the imported Vino Puro to Mrs James F Waters for a sum in excess of 12000 A member of three jockey clubs in South America Luro has raced in this country for some years mainly in California Ho now has six South Americanbreds which will race at Arlington and Washington Parks They are Sambo Rombon Stop IT Bronte II Vino Blanco Grancasa and Poco Casa In Hollywood Luro is known as the Gay Gaucho because of his ability to entertain with stories of the land of his birth Arlington Park features races over the grass course and it is in this type of racing the South Americans are expected to Senor Luros Horses at Arlington Jack Mackenzie Popular Official HOLLYWOOD Calif June 19 19Highclass Highclass racing will be staged throughout of the Coronation Cup CupSince Since Phar Lap we have not been greatly impressed with imported racers although quick to add the bloodlines of some importations should prove priceless for our breed ¬ ing structure Kayak H and Sorteado were fine racers but beyond them the South American invaders were not much Only time will tell regarding Meissen the Peru horse which is now being pointed for the 75000 added Hollywood Gold Cup A French bred and a winner of all three of his starts in this country Salfqrd II shapes up as one of the most useful horses to arrive here in recent years On Wednesday at Hollywood Park we witnessed the American debut of Valdina Farms Colorado Lad and though finishing no better than fourth he gave a splendid account of himself and is certain to improve He was slow to settle into stride but once he found his racing legs per ¬ formed in a manner which augurs well for his future He is one of the most impressive looking horses now at Hollywood Park Quite a few of the yearlings which were imported and sold at the Saratoga sales last August have yet to make their debut Regardless of what they show it remains that our homebreds consistently prove they can hold their own with those from any country As said above the greatest value of fashionablybred imported horses will be their contribution to our breeding breedingAfter After ten days at Hollywood Park we feel qualified to say it is one of the best managed tracks we have visited in many a day And we say that despite the unfortunate incidents which have been broadcast throughout the land in recent weeks Jack Mackenzie general manager at Hollywood is the type of racing official who strains to keep the sporting traditions of the sport alive and he has made a fine job of it He is wholeheartedly for races which have a meaning beyond the payoff and for innovations to safeguard the sport and to make the day at the races a pleasant one for those attending Recently they installed the film patrol at Hollywood Park and although after seeing the pictures we must say the device leaves us cold we can think of equipment Mackenzie has sponsored that is now regarded as valuable in race track gadgets Every one we have met in California has a liigh regard for the Holly ¬ wood manager and this is especially true of those who work under him Besides his managerial ability he is the pleasant executive who makes friends for his track and for the sport of horse racing Above all he is sincere in his desires to keep racing at a high level and we must add our admiration for the manner in which he has faced the incidents of the past ten days Believe us Hollywood Park is in very capable hands handsThe The appointment of Fred H Parks to succeed the late Algernon Daingerfield as assistant to the secretary and treasurer of The Jockey Club will be hailed by all who know this capable chap who has done so much to elevate steeplechasing in this country Algernon Daingerfield was as much a lover of the thoroughbred as his father was before him He was not in favor of some of the changes which have come into racing but to the end he rigidly maintained his ideas of the sport and what they stood for Fred Parks too loves the sport and especially the finer side but regardless of the problems which face him Ihey will be tackled with all the vigor and enthusiasm of a much younger man Parks has had plenty of experience in the steeplechase field and the difficulties which constantly beset him in that branch of the sport will stand him in good stead in his new work He will continue as secretary of the National Steeple ¬ chase and Hunt Association and also as handicapper and racing secretary for steeple chasing at Belmont Park Saratoga and Aqueduct With his new duties he will have plenty of work but he thrives on it The Jockey Club also appointed George H Bull president at Saratoga and Empire as chairman of the breeding bureau to succeed the late John E Cowdin Bull brings years of experience to his new tasks
