LUCK OF VANDERBILT ABOUT DUE TO CHANGE CHANGENew New World and Petrify Appear to Hold Key to Successful Season for Eastern Owner OwnerAlfred Alfred G Vanderbilt who hasnt had any luck to speak of since he put Discovery in moth balls as a race horse may be in for a change of fortune The young master of Pimlico and Belmont Park is heading in this direction with two race horses who could very well furnish a popular surprise by winning the 10000 added Lassie Stakes and the 40000 added Classic Vanderbilt will he represented in the Lassie Stakes which will be run here July 5 by Petrify a daughter of Identify Sag Rock His representative in the Classic will be New World a colt who made his successful 1941 debut recently in New York From this point both Vanderbilt campaigners must be given an excellent chance to accomplish their objectives al ¬ though New World admittedly has the most difficult assignment in being asked to hand Whirlaway a whipping in the 40000 fixture Checking fixtureChecking over the nominations for the Lassie Stakes it is impossible to find a filly who has a more impressive record than the Vanderbilt miss That daughter of the good looking chestnut stallion Identify which the young New Yorker picked up in a claiming race campaigned him for a time and then retired him to his Sagamore Farm for stal ¬ lion duty has won three races in as many starts Most impressive of course was her victory in the Starbottle Purse at Aqueduct last Tuesday when she defeated a field which included Airy Goer Ben Gray Court Man ¬ ners and Riposte in 105 time that was twofifths of a second off the track stand ¬ ard at the Long Island course Prior to that winning adventure the Sagamore home ¬ bred had won two threefurlong dashes at Santa Anita last January one over a muddy track and one over a fast one Nothing in the way of a filly to compare with Petrify has been seen in Chicago racing thus far this season seasonBOON BOON TO TRACK MANAGEMENT MANAGEMENTNew New Worlds preparatipn for the Classic is a boon to the Arlington Park manage ¬ ment because prior to his successful debut in the Flying Heels Handicap at Aqueduct the mile and a quarter threeyearold race here was practically being conceded to the son of Blenheim II as a race which would amount to little more than a walkover The sharpest of the threeyearolds who have raced in the Chicago area are John Marschs To A Tee and Walmac Farms Bushwhacker but there is nothing in their recent improv ¬ ing performances to offer a comparison by which one could feel sure that they were capable of giving Whirlaway a race in the July 26 test testA A number of horses to be sure beat Whirl away as a twoyearold and before he found himself as a threeyearold but it will be remembered that New World whipped Whirl away in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes at Saratoga last summer in the excellent tune of 111 to accomplish his score well within himself while receiving five pounds from the Calumet ace In fairness to Whirlaway it should also be pointed out that he was in trouble on the turn when Longden tried to make him go between Pompion and HyCop and that the Canadian boy had to take up and go around The first son of Discovery to be a stakes winner New World finished his 1940 campaign by winning the Maryland Futurity at Laurel to hang up his juvenile shoes with a record of three victories in six starts and purse earnings to his credit totaling 17165 17165FRESH FRESH AND FIT COLT COLTNew New Worlds presence in the Arlington Classic will be of value to the management in booming the race because that colt is fresh and fit The son of Discovery hasnt been punched dizzy by the equine Joe Louis as have most of the other threeyearolds while Whirlaway won the Kentucky Derby Preakness Belmont Henry of Navarre Purse and Dwyer Stakes Therefore until he meets Whirlaway the quetion casn always be asked as to whether or not he is capable of upsetting the son of Blenheim There al ¬ ways are plenty of people whether it is in horse racing baseball or boxing looking for something to knock down the favorite favoriteWhen When Vanderbilts racing luck was run ¬ ning high back in 1935 and 1936 he frequently started Discovery and Identify as an entry Maybe it is significant that heris sending a son of the former and a daughter of the latter here to Chicago in an attempt to win two such important events as the Classic and the Lassie Stakes But whether they finish first or last in those events there is no ques ¬ tion but what their presence adds a little something to them
