PEGGING PETE FINALLY TRIUMPHS AT DETROIT DETROITPeter Peter Hastings Gelding Shows Way Home to Medrano After Six Failures at Motor City Track TrackDETROIT DETROIT Mich June 27 The silks of Mrs Lonnie Copenhavcr were carried to a length and onehalf victory in the first race at the Fair Grounds today by Pegging Pete Second honors in the sixfurlong sprint went to J Schwartz Medrano which was a neck before Mrs R B Allens Hechal at the close The favored King Bee from the W E Ball stable tired after gaining a contending posi ¬ tion early and could do no better than ninth in the twelvehorse field fieldJockey Jockey Johnny Oros had the mount on Pegging Pete and sent his charge right along after starter Bryan Steele dispatched the horses to a good start Pegging Pete held a two and onehalf lengths lead passing the initial quarter post Curliqueue was second a head before Tough Bird and Medrano was fourth fourthPegging Pegging Pete continued to hold his advan ¬ tage on the upper turn and approaching the stretch he was two and onehalf lengths before Medrano which had moved up to second place a length arid onehalf before Curliqueue The latter was showing signs of having had enough at this stage and soon dropped back beaten beatenOROS OROS KEEPS AFTER CHARGE CHARGEPegging Pegging Pete was a length and onehalf in front of Medrano an eighth from the wire and Hechal was a length farther back in third place Oros kept right after the Copen haver gelding in the final furlong and his charge responded well enough to hold Med ¬ rano safe The latter was hard ridden in the last seventy yards to take a neck decision from Hechal for the second award awardRunning Running time over the fast track was 113 and Pegging Pete returned his sup porters odds of 5 to 1 in the straight wager ¬ ing ingThe The continuation of warm and partially cloudy weather failed to detract from inter ¬ est in the program presented at the local course today and another goodsized crowd turned out to witness the sport The racing strip which has been fast during the past week remained firm and running time for the earlier events was good Mutuel offi ¬ cials stated that wagering was brisk through ¬ out the afternoon and evening and an active atmosphere prevailed prevailedThe The major portion of the card was made up of horses from the plater ranks with the exception of the third race which matched twoyearolds at five furlongs under allow ¬ ance conditions The fourth and fifth events drew good fields of the better platers quar ¬ tered here and served as cofeatures
