Col. Matt Winn Leaving Churchill for Hawthorne! j Will Take Over Active Direction ! Of Current Lincoln Fields Meet LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 12.— None the worse for his exacting task in presenting last Saturdays seventy-first Kentucky Derby, Col. Matt Winn will leave Churchill Downs tomorrow for Chicago, where he will continue direction of the Lincoln Fields meeting, currently in progress at the Hawthorne track. Churchill Downs and the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club are operated by j the American Turf Association, of which Colonel Winn is president. Before departing, Colonel Winn, who was quick to set in motion the plans for j Churchill Downs annual spring meeting as -soon as racing was given the green light by Washington authorities, revealed that I Saturdays Derby Day throng numbered 76,118. including 14,000 members of the I armed forces, many of whom were guests I ■ of the management. This total probably! was swelled considerably, however, by members of the Kentucky State Militia who patroled the course, concession employes, ! police and others whose presence was not : revealed inthe turnstile count. " Upon his arrival at Hawthorne, Colonel Winn will relieve Charles W. Bidwill of i active direction of that meeting. Bidwill, 5 an executive at both the Hawthorne and j I Sportsmans Park tracks, graciously filled j in for Colonel Winn while he was engaged * at Churchill Downs. Following the close of the Lincoln Fields-at-Hawthorne meeting, Colonel Winn will i j t leave for the East to assume command of ! 1 the Empire City meeting, which will be 1 staged at Jamaica this summer, opening • for 18 days on July 16.
